I have a quick question about the "I'm still alive call".  I have seen that these usually happen on a weekend like Saturday or Sunday.  Is this true? and is there some general time frame like evening calls or is it totally random?  I am so worried I am going to miss the call due to my work.  I am freaking out!!!

Hi Pamela - I'm not sure about what call you are talking about.  They make the "I'm here" call when they arrive and then after battle stations they usually make the "I'm a sailor" call.  Although they don't call it that.  Then if you are lucky they might have a couple other calls in between but no guarantees on any of those (we got a couple of extra calls on the weekends when our son was in boot camp).  Best bet is to answer your phone (if you are able) no matter what the caller ID shows.

Also, be sure to come over to the boot camp page (I left the link in the welcome message on your page) and ask any questions you have there.  You're more likely to get a response from someone over there.  And be sure to join your PIR group once you know when it is.

Thank you.  Her recruiter told us the calls were called the "I'm here" on the day they arrive...  The "I'm still alive" call about week 4 and the "I'm a Sailor" at the end.

I just joined the PIR group.  Thank you for the info!

Ok - no guarantees on the 4 week call but hopefully you are lucky enough to get one (or more!).

;-D

Pamela,

I am glad that you joined your PIR group, but I also encourage you to join the BC Mom group. Those of us that stick around that group, who have "been there, done that" do not join all of the PIR groups that are formed, but we are here to answer your general questions and we see the messages post and come through in our personal email feeds.

Yes, in more recent years, the midway call, around week 4 or so is sometimes referred to as the "I'm still alive" call. Our SRs don't know that we refer to the calls as such.

As B'sNukeMom said, be sure to keep your phone close by you if able. Some of our moms have left specific voice mail messages for their SRs if they think that they might not be able to answer the phone, so they know you love them, or recommend another family member to call. If you don't think they have that number you might give it to them.

You might also leave a message for them to call you back, in case you just missed the call.

I hope this helps,

Chipmunk

I suppose it happens random.

Cassy0110 -  This information from one of the pages that Lemonelephant put together on the BC Mom and Loved Ones group page might be helpful. Some of this may be out of date, since the SRs no longer mail home their phones, but there is other useful information.
