My daughter will be going to boot camp in November and obviously will be at the Great Lakes Training Center over the holidays. Is it business as usual on the holidays? Thanks for your comments...

hm - well, not positive - but here is my story!! My son went to boot camp before N4M's - and I was not aware what "as usual" actually was. He left here on December 19th. I did get a phone call on Christmas Day!! I also got two in one week one time - not sure why - if holiday related because this was in January! If his PIR is the Friday before a Monday holiday (President's Day for us) - then he/she will have that day off also!!
Thanks Brenda--I'm trying to get her prepped to think that she may not be able to call us. But I welcome other's experiences with it. - Nancy
Well guess what, that is very smart of you. Let her be prepared not to have contact so if she can you will all be estatic. Everyone has to remember, their are only so many phones. My son had his b-day during BC, I was more upset than he was. I know your not supposed to be negative when you talk to them but I lost it. 1st my first born leaves and then for the 1st time in 19 years he won't be with me for his B-day (OK always with friends but we ALWAYS had b-day dinners and then the kids left again) he said Mom we are so busy, you don't really know the dates. This is his 2nd year and 2nd b-day in a row, guess what still bothers me more than him. He just got back from a mission so we are preparing to go see him before he leaves again. Take care!
Thanks Paula--I guess we will celebrate before she goes in!!
The holiday will be a non-training day, much like a Sunday. There will be a big meal at the chow hall. They still cannot receive packages, but cards are great. Phones calls may be tricky if every division tries to use the phones, as has been said, there are only so many.

Church is a good option if she is so inclined. I went to listen to the Christmas choir and I'm not even Christian.
Good to know they allow cards! Like you said too many people and not enough phones, so I won't count on that. Also nice to know hearing a Christmas choir is an option too.
Yes, for the most part it is "business as usual".

My Sailor left on November 17th last year - so he was in for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years. I kept the phone glued to my side all day on Thanksgiving - I didn't really think he'd get to call, but just on the off chance. So there I am sitting at the dinner table and said "ring dammit"... well 30 seconds later it rang... but it was his brother sitting right next to me thinking he was funny...

We did get calls on Christmas Day - but he said it was cuz the division earned them, not just because it was Christmas.

Also, not sure where you live - but be prepared for the frozen tundra in January in Great Lakes. It was was 23 below. I think the high was minus 7 - before the wind chill.
The Thanksgiving 'phone call' is too funny, but of course you didn't think so at the time! I live in MI, but its always colder around Chicago...
I'm glad you reminded me--they 'earn' those phone calls.
Your Thanksgiving phone story has done wonders for my soul today! Thanks for posting and thank your son for the laugh he has provided to many of us.
My son is also leaving in November so I just wanted to share your excitement and your pain. Holidays will sure be different without him. And the Navy experience is all new to me. I do have a Son who is in the Army but it doesn't make it easier and I'm not sure how similar the experience is. If you ever need a friend that understands I'm here. Hopefully we'll learn the ropes together
Thanks--its nice to know someone else is 'new' to this. I arranged a 'Thanksgiving' get together with the family before my daughter goes. Today I bought a little Christmas tree with lights on it and wrapped up some little gifts. We played Christmas songs while she opened her gifts. I said this is a little Christmas under the little tree and when you graduate, we'll bring some more gifts then... So I think this will help her get through 'that day.'
You are too sweet! My son will be leaving the 17th so will be gone over the holidays. He's bought Christmas presents for the family, but we've not been so well-organized. He's just amazing me with taking care of everything himself. I asked him yesterday if we had to leave the tree up until he graduates and he said no. But now I'm thinking that I may leave a small one up in his room. He's been away from home before (1 year of college), but the closer this gets, the harder it's getting for me. I'm not looking forward to getting 'the box' because it just seems too much like their personal effects after death. Think I'll let my husband get the mail for a few weeks after he leaves.
