I will be doing scarfs for Christmas,to send to Afganistan. Since it takes a while to knit or crotchet a number of scarfs, I'm asking all of you for your help now. The scarfs will need to be no wider than 8 inches and 60 inches long and no fringe that could get caught in their gear. They must be desert camo, tans, and browns. Any of you have any questions, please let me know. The more scarfs the better. They will all be sent to our sailors and Marines to keep them warm. To those who don't knit & crochet the scarfs can be made of polar fleece. They actually have a fabric pattern that looks like a sand (grades of tans). Since the fleece is about 60" wide, all the you need to do is cut 7 or 8' wide stripes and the cut off the selvages to make them look neat.

We now have 250 scarfs.

You go girl!
I picked up 4 yards of the polar fleece today, the variegated light tan color. That should make 18 - 20 scarves.
I'll let let you know for sure after I get it cut.

Lyn, should this fabric be laundered?
I don't ever pre-wash fleece. It doesn't bleed or shrink, so I wouldn't bother washing it. They also don't put any sizing or chemicals on the fabric.
Two knitted ones from me....you other ladies are FAST. Very inspiring, guys.
I've crocheted 5 scarves and used the kniffty knitter on 3 so far...still have lots of yarn! My mom said she got 3 done!
great going Valeriejean. I keep a scarf at the computer and crochet on it while I read these posts. I am almost finished with my 1st one.
I also make baby blankets for the crisis pregnancy center and I have found that thrift stores can be a valuable place to find great bargains on yarn. When I was in Milw in May, I went to my favorite one and bought a bunch for $10.00. Then I crammed it into my suitcase and flew it home.
I crochet and would love to contribute toward this wonderful project. I don't know how many but I will try to make a bunch, and will also try to recruit friends to help! Thx for organizing this!
Thanks so much carolyn. Every scarf will be put to good use.
I have 11 yards of fleece that should be delivered to my house tomorrow to make scarves with. I couldn't make it to Joann's on Columbus Day to use the 1 day coupon so I got online and ordered the fleece and got shipping for $2.95 since it was my first order. I will make whatever I can with that and let you know.
Matt's mom...That's a great deal on fleece! Where did you order it from? Also, does anyone know a good place/website to order yarn? How many skeins do you think is needed to make 1 scarf that is 8x60 inches? Thanks y'all!
Carolyn that will depend on knitting or crocheting and the size needle/hook! When I use my size "k" hook; a 5 oz skein of medium weight seems to be just about right (I just do a double crochet...nothing fancy).

I ordered stuff from Joanne's because they had the sand camo (or called something like that) online...plus if you sign up online, the 1st order is only $2.95 for shipping and they were having a killer sale on that yarn! But I've used the sunday ads from Michaels and Joannes to purchase and Walmart even has some that looked good.
Carolyn I signed up on JoannsFabric.com. Every Sunday they have an ad in the lcoal paper and if you can't get in the store you can enter the discount code from the coupon when you order online and get the same discount. Even if you don't have one in your area go online and sign up for the emails because they will send you coupons. And the first order is shipped for $2.95. Mine was delivered by FedEx.
