Holiday and graduation gifts for a portable lifestyle?

My family is contacting me about what to get Chris for the holidays, and as a boot camp graduation gift later.

Having been in the Navy I know how small and portable everything needs to be. I traveled with two sea bags, one with my official stuff (uniforms, etc, whatever was issued in boot camp) and one containing personal gear, from civilian clothes to a personal blanket and books.

My son intends to use his first few paychecks out of boot camp to buy a new laptop and iPod, which leaves just about everything else for us to choose from.

So, what do you get for the soon-to-be sailor who will have so little space for storage?

Here's the ideas I have so far:
*White gold Navy ring to commemorate graduation (one ring on each hand is allowed while in uniform)
*Pay for a quality tattoo at a reputable/safe tattoo parlor - after boot camp.
*Electronic book system such as the Kindle - he can buy a couple dozen "books" before heading to sea and not have to worry about real books taking up space.
*New cell phone

Okay, the tattoo is a family thing - we're into that stuff. We're very familiar with Navy tattoo regs and careful to keep it within the rules. I designed a tattoo for Chris to commemorate his entry into the Navy - the USS Constitution sailing through a Scottish Clan Badge strap (to recognize our Scottish heritage) with the words "Honor, Courage, Commitment" on the "strap" and an anchor-shaped strap-end. He already has an "armband" of two dragons eating a Celtic knot, which I also designed.

So, any ideas we can send to family members would be appreciated.

I wouldn't spend too much on a cell phone or service plan until he has a good idea of where he'll be stationed. For example, most of the US phones and carriers don't work in place such as Japan.

The external hard drive is a wonderful idea. USB Flash drives would be handy. A digital camcorder, they're going on sale now. Skype for the laptop? A pocket sized sewing kit?
Yikes, I was thinking of the webcam for it...
If the laptop didn't come with a webcam, GET ONE!!! When my son calls home on Skype, we end up talking for 2-3 hours, because he can see the whole family. It's the next best thing to having him right in my kitchen.
If your not looking for something big- I gave my daughter a medal of St Christopher- patron saint of travel, and the other side had the Navy emblem, they can wear religious metals with their uniforms. The thing she liked most about it was it has no clasp, just slides over her head, so it cant fall off.
Hmm, that could work. I've been thinking of giving him a Horned God pendant before he goes to boot camp. I could spend a little extra for a really nice one and make it a Solstice gift.
These have all been great suggestions and I thank everyone for their input. I am interested in knowing where you got the St. Christopher with the Navy emblem?
One idea for rings, some of the jobs mean they can't wear their jewelry while working, that's hazardous. I wore my wedding band on a chain under my uniform, as I wasn't allowed to wear it while I was working and I didn't want to lose it or leave it at home. So if you get a ring as a gift, ask them what they can wear while working, and if they have to take their rings and watches off, give them a nice long chain for the ring.
Chris will be an IT and should be able to wear a ring. I was an HT/DC and wore my own wedding and class rings on a chain while I was involved in duties that forbid rings. My hubby was a Nuke MM (Submarines) and had to do the same.
IT ... I'm still getting used to that instead of RM, LOL.
RM, DP... what is it, five rates wrapped into IT? My BIL was a DP, started as a DT.

I heard they're planning to re-combine HT and DC too. They had just split them when I joined, as part of the USS Stark fallout.
My husband was on the Dubuque in the gulf when the Stark was hit. I remember it quite well. Too bad it has nearly been forgotten.
That the Stark has been forgotten is shocking to me. Now all anyone talks about is the Cole, which, frankly, was not nearly as bad as the Stark in terms of damage, loss of life, or political implications.

Same goes for the USS Liberty. I am always amazed when I meet people who don't know what happened to that poor crew.
