Can you send letters to your sailors when they are at sea and can they write back?

Definetly yes! Paper mail is ALWAYS great to get. It does take a bit longer to get to us than normal. Don't forget those goodie packages. They'll be the most popular one in their division that week.
Can you send them goodies when they are at sea? If so, what type things can you send?
You can send them pretty much anything(Anything Legal Of Course!) But remember when sending food, they may not get it RIGHT away so don't send anything that perishes quickly. But feel free to send anything,(Tshirts, toiletrie items, Candy, Cup of noddles, video games, dvds)
Use the FPO/APO flat rate boxes from the post office. Pack everything tightly. You will have to fill out a customs form, but it isn't that difficult. Try to send scented toiletries in a separate box from any food. No liquids!

Insurance and delivery confirmation only go as far as the post office in the states, once it enters the military mail system, those don't apply.
*gack* *choke* *laugh*
I need a skyhook.
How long does it take mail to reach a ship at sea?
Anywhere from a week or so to much longer. I've heard of eight weeks or more! All depends on where they are and what they're doing, and if the mail is coming in via air or supply ship. And yes, if coming in by supply ship, it is hoisted over to the other ship, and yes, sometimes mail falls into the sea forever. That's why you never send anything valuable.
I do have the same questions. if they can how long does it take for them to receive their mail? My son is underway right now he has been gone 3 weeks. He will be back to san diego in 7 days yeah.......anyway I sent a letter to the address he gave me. so hopefully he gets it soon. Also we send each other email everyday. I talk to my son everyday so boot camp was hard. but we find a way to communicate. He gets down alot and my job is to cheer him up and help keep him focused. He has always been a mama's boy and still is, He is only 19 and been gone for 1 1/2 years.
My son is 23 and just came home after boot camp and school. I didn't see him for 6 months and thought I would lose my mind. I was used to him being here all the time except when he was at work or went out. He will be leaving on the 3rd for Washington State until 2014. I don't know how we are going to communicate while he is gone. He has a cell phone and a laptop but he started going 2-3 weeks without communication after a couple of months in school. I wish I could understand why he chose to do that. anyway, he is home now and I am treasuring every moment. I don't know when I will see him again and it will be so hard to see him go. He is my very heart!
