OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

laptops for A school
I have been reading other parents comments about taking or shipping their recruits laptops and cell phones to them for A school. My question is do they NEED a laptop for A school or is that just something that would be nice to have for other personal purposes?
Is there a list given sometime/somewhere of what they need to bring and not bring to A school, like there was for BC?

They do not need a laptop for A School. Cell phone is probably really the only thing they need other than some civilian clothes. I am not sure all the ships (barracks) have internet. We did send his X-Box at his request. Your recruit can tell you what clothes to send. We sent two pairs of jeans, 3 - 4 T shirts, sweatshirt and one pair of tennis shoes. They will have very little storage space. Also if they have to move to another ship for some reason they have to take everything they own with them. More than likely the recruit will not be allowed to have anything for several weeks after BC. They have to earn any privilages they get. Your recruit will be able to call you and let you know when he or she can receive stuff. Hope this helps alittle. Good Luck!

That helped alot. Thanks. And I love your photo. We visited that very spot with our twin boys a couple weeks before they headed off to boot camp. Just curious, when are they allowed to wear civilian clothes while in A school? evenings? Weekends? or what? -

There is no need for a laptop, but is is very helpful. It serves as entertainment center and communications (free Skype phone calls and video-conferencing, email, etc).
Most of the sailors people are talking about already have laptops and are accustomed to being "plugged in" all the time. This is more about having the "comforts of home" while they complete their transition into the Navy than an actual need.
For sailors who aren't used to having a computer, who aren't already somewhat dependent on having one, a laptop isn't a big deal. Plus, if they really want one, they can buy one themselves. My son's laptop died just before he joined, but they get generous paychecks ($500 every two weeks) and in A-school he bought his own computer, way better than his old laptop, and better than any we could have bought for him.
Most bases have a liberty center where there are computers available for sailors to use for occasional emails, but they are time-limited, other sailors want to use them too. -

Thanks Arwen, That answers my question very well. Good to know they can buy one themselves. I was concerned about having to buy two (twins) computers and pay for shipping, etc. I had no idea what their paychecks would be. I am happy to finally know that.

My son actually purchased a new laptop when he got to A school. Very inexpensive at the NEX. He uses it for school and entertainment purposes.

They don't need anything for A school which is not provided. Pens, perhaps, but not likely.
A laptop is a target for theft, so they should invest in lo-jack or other tracking software.devices.
Also, do not buy one for him. Sailors with any kind of interest in electronics will want to choose their own toys. Unless you're a geek to and understand all the bells and whistles, let him buy his own! -

There is not one set list-each rating's A school will have their own regulations. Ask your sailor as they were issued the rules of the A school when they checked in. Computers are provided on base but most kids get theirs so they can work on them (and play on them) in their rooms.

Great question! I know my nephew in the army had one and skyped home from Afghanistan. We got our recruit one for graduation, but are unsure when he can have it. Please advise!

If he's grad-and-go you can give it to him after he transfers (if he's going to a Great Lakes school) or at the airport before he flies to his new A-school.
If he's not grad-and-go, you will have to wait until after he gets an address at A-school and ship it to him. -

Joanne look in the discussion forum on your PIR group for the info on photo pkgs. You may have to click on "View all" and it may be on page 2 or 3 or so
