My daughter is currently in A school and about a month ago she developed migraine headaches.  They did an MRI and found nothing.  I thought it could be sinusitis as her father suffers with that disorder and as a child she had a bout of it as well.  Apparently, that is not the case.  The Navy doctor prescribed migraine medication and an antidepressant as an adjunct as it has proven to be effective with migraine therapy.  I work for a psychiatrist and spoke with our head pharmacist and she said that the combination of medications she is on can be effective in easing the migraines.

My concern is that if this treatment does not work, the Navy has told her that they are going to medically discharge her.  She is extremely dissapointed and thinks that I do not want her to come home, which is not the case.  Her dream has always been to make a career out of the Navy and she feels if she is discharged, the family will think she is a failure.  I don't know what words to use to explain to her that it is not the case.  I am just very heartbroken because she is going through this.  She recently got engaged to another Sailor who just got his orders for C School and will be leaving Friday.  They were planning to marry after they both finished C school and completed their first deployments which would be in about 2 1/2 years.  I am concerned that they will marry sooner and I don't feel that is a good idea.

If anyone has any advice on what words I can use to help her through this stressful period until they know if this medication will work.  Any responses are greatly appreciated.

.Thank you all,

hi because your daughter is worried all the time its a catch 22 its what is making her headachea worse if she gets some pepermint oil to put on her head and trys to find anything to relax her tapes .since her migraines started when she joined the navymaybe she doesnt want to upset her family but has changed her mind and would rather not be in the navy.maybe her boyfriend and her decided over two years is to long to wait to get marriedand both of them being in is very hard .i am sure they have talked to oher couples that have gone through the same thing as them.if it was my daughter i would just sit down and ask her everything she was worried aboutand what she would like to happen if there was anythingthat i could do to help her or the boyfriend.i get horrible nigraines sometimes you need to talk to get rid of the stress in your life good luck yo you and your daughter
She claims that there is nothing that she is stressed about nor worried about. With regard to her being in the Navy, that is what is upsetting her the most and the chance that she may be discharged. She always wanted to be a Sailor, and I and her father have questioned her over and over again with regard to her not wanting to remain the Navy and she venemently denies that she wants to get out. She knows if she really wants to get out, there are ways to do it. I will tell her about the peppermint oil and see if that works. They both had a full liberty weekend and I told her I wouldn't bother her while they are together this weekend. I am hoping she calls me when she get back on base so I can see how she is doing with the medication.

The migraines did start until about a month ago when it got extremely humid in great lakes. When we were there in May, everything smelled musty that is why I thought it was either allergies or sinusitis. When she was around 3 years old, we had to sell our house and move because we had a very, very case of mold in the basement and nothing we tried worked. As soon as we bought a new house, the allergies and sinusitis was gone and she has not suffered since then. I still believe these migraines have a lot to do with the wicked humidity this past summer. As of yesterday, it has finally cooled down to the mid 60's there.

Thanks for you advice and I will just keep my fingers crossed that all goes the way she wants it to.
headaches are hard to find out what causes them i have migraines but also have had a few sinus surgerys and the weather does affect them i hope her dr gave her a list of food not to eat as well or at least try not to eat .these headaches can put you down for days .i hope her medicine helps her they usually try them for about four weeks then try a new one .there is one to try and prevent the headache usually taken at night and then the pill as soon as the headache starts .i know my headaches are worse with the weather and i can tell when it is going to rain.i hope her headaches go away as the weather gets cooler.thats good they had time of together .you said you were worried that they would get married sooner than the two years why are you worried are they to young or have not been going out very long or just to much to handle at this time.i will keep my fingers crossed her medicine works and she starts feeling better really soon
Just be there to support her and let her know that it is ok to what ever she does. Do not act disappointed or push her for questions on what will she do now. This seems like a big dream to her and if it is crushed she will have mourning time and time to heal. Stress is everywhere and especially if she feels she is letting you down. It is hard to see your kids unhappy and not want to fix it, As moms that is what we do. Just be there and as my daughter so aptly put it " Give them Wings to fly away and a soft spot to Land when they need it" Good luck to you all!
I am glad to report that she is doing much better. The migraines have become less intense and the doctor says that the medication takes time to build up in her system. I am also sure that my prayers are being answered. She is taking the leaving of her fiancee pretty well also, but Friday night will be the test when he is on the plane leaving GL. She knew that they would be separated for a time and she knows that this time apart will be the biggest test for them to ensure that they are really meant for each other.

Thank you all for you kind advice.
Hi - I suffer from migraines and sometimes it helps (a ton) to make sure I'm very well hydrated, if I get behind on water intake I suffer for it, also a magnesium deficiency (along with vitamin B2) can cause intense head pain as well as eye issues. If you do a google search with the words migraine magnesium you will find a lot of information. Remember, calcium and magnesium balance each other out, if you have too much of one and not the other it can cause issues. Just don't take both supplements together, take at separate times of the day.
