My son, David, is currently in Basic Training - scheduled PIR 10/15/10.  He was unable to pass his running test the first time and he was off by about a minute.  Other than that, he is thriving and with Navy Life and has no complaints and is doing well in other areas.  I'm hoping that he passes so that he can graduate with his group. If he doesn't pass the running test when his unit does Battlestations, does that mean that he doesn't do Battlestations with his unit?  If he hasn't passed the running in time for his PIR, how long does he have to pass before he gets discharged?    If he is delayed, does he do his Battlestations with another Unit?  Hope someone can provide info to at least some of my questions.

He will do fine, and they do change for the better when I talked to my son when he was at Great Lakes he sound more confident. When I finally got to see him he also change in the way he appeared. He was standing taller prouder than before.

My son is now in SC for nuke school he says it is beautiful and the base is awesome..
My SR called me last week and said he did not pass the initial run test by a min and 1/2...is this common? And do you ladies think he will be able to make this up by his division text in a couple days and then the final test?

He said he got sick from the penicillin shot and thought that may be a factor...Im just really nervous he will not pass it and I will not see him 11/12 when his PIR is.
Kehigham - I am going through the same thing. My son's PIR is 10/15 and as of his call today, he still hadn't passed the running. He has improved since he was there. The first test he was a minute behind and a recent timed run he was just 15 seconds off. So with all of the physical activity they get in boot camp, and the fact that your son was not at 100% - if not from the penicillin he got- from whatever infection he had to cause him to get the pencillin. It is fairly common. David said that there are others in his division who still didn't pass the running. I know the RDCs and their fellow SRs do everything they can to help the slower runners. The worst thing that will happen is that he won't graduate with his division. My husband and I are very nervous about this because David has his run test on Tuesday and we don't know if we will know by the time we leave on Wednesday whether or not he will pass. We just have to stay optimistic. My best to you and your SR.
Davidsmom,

Thank you for your encouraging words. I hope your son does pass his run. I wish all the best to you, your family, and your SR.
Ok....now you all have me worried......my son is so stressed about it in his letters and so I looked to see how far they have to run and in what amount of time.......I was thinking it shouldn't be that hard.....now i am not so sure and am worried that i have already booked everything:-(
I just keep my letters positive and tell him that I know he can do it.
If he does not pass it will he get to call and let us know?
shinertxgal here is the link to your PIR group just click on the http address then click on "+ join group" http://www.navyformoms.com/group/pir1152010

yes he should get a call if he may not PIR...but it wll be fine. Just join the PIR group...there you will be kept up to date on the group
Yep... It seems that the run is the hardest thing for them to pass. Even if they have been running, often in boot camp they get sick and are stressed out. The air is different there as well.

They get three tries to make the run...he'll do it. Just keep positive...let him know that if he doesn't pass that it will be okay...you will be fine with it. They really worry about disappointing family. You can cross that bridge if you come to it.
David did pass his run on the Tuesday before PIR. We just got back from PIR since we drove from Philly. We had a bit of a scare on the way to PIR since David never got a chance to have the "I am a sailor call". Until we got to the PIR on 10/15 and they checked for his name, we were afraid something had gone wrong. Thanks for all the support from everyone on this discussion I started. It always helps to know you are not the only one going through a particular situation.
Congrats on the major event
My son also had difficulty passing the running portion....he didn't pass until the day before battlestations....we didn't know if he would graduate with his group which was a very anxious time for all of us.....he made it and everything flowed after that....don't worry....they help and encourage all along the way.
