What kind of clothes will my daughter need in Chicago for boot camp

Hi everyone - I am a new Navy Mom and my daughter will leave for bootcamp on December 15th - or at least that is what I have been told. She wants me to buy her long johns to wear. Will she be able to keep them or is that one of the items that will be sent home? Also, for the running, she has her own running shoes since she was a runner in high school and part of college. Can she keep those or will she be outfitted with a Navy pair. Lastly, for swimming should she bring goggles and cap or will they give her those as well. I don't want to buy a bunch of stuff and then she has to send it home. Any insight would be so appreciated.

She won't be able to have any of those items. It would all be sent home.

She can have long johns after boot camp, and her own running shoes then. She won't need the goggles and capl; the swimming is a short test.
She will only need the clothes on her back. The Navy will provide EVERYTHING for her..underwear, hygiene products, clothes, outerwear. She will sent back EVERYTHING she takes in the box.

Here are some things she can take...
Send phone #'s and addresses in her wallet....believe it or not they do forget #'s
Just bring the clothes on your back...wear layers...a bulky jacket will be more difficult to fit in the box
Wallet with ID, SSN card, stamps, (small, plain wallet…boys and girls!), bank info
$25 cash
a pocket bible…I sent a Sailor Bible, putting a letter for him to find later and a self addressed stamped envelope with a few pieces of paper in it for the first letter home.
a small religious medallion
can have small photos in wallet
plain wrist watch
an activated calling card...make sure your rct knows how to use it...practice using it.

They CAN take a cell phone to call and text you along the way, will make the final "I'm here" call and then pack it up in the box to be sent home. Make sure it is charged and send the charger with her.

I'm going to post a greeting message on your profile page...scroll down on your page and read comments left to you.I'll leave links to groups and other info that will help the both of you.

The Navy will issue her a bathing suit and she'll only wear it once while in boot camp.

Make sure she gets her hair cut by regulations...above the collar and where she won't need hairbows or barrettes...they aren't allowed at first. If her hair isn't short enough they will just wack it off...uneven, no style, etc.
My son's holy medal was returned with his clothes, so you may want to re-think that. Good luck!
many of the things they can keep they get flustered and through in the box and perhaps he was told to through it in...the medals have to be small enough to fit on dog tags.

When they are putting their stuff in the boxes they are exhausted, stressed, hungry, scared, being yelled at...don't know whether to scratch their watch or wind their butt.
That is so right...his was small enough to fit on his dog tags, but like you said maybe he got flustered and just tossed it into the box.
Yes and his RDC could have told him to as well...they tend to do a lot of yelling and it is very intimidating...the rct isn't going to say "well, I think this is allowed"

My son sent his drivers licence and social home in the box..that earned him a call home pretty quick to have it sent to him.
Thank you so much - this has been so helpful. I looked at all the links you sent me and printed out the materials. I now have a much better idea of what she can/cannot take.

One last thing - can you ladies tell me if I have the follwoing sequence correct -
1. She will be given an address for us to write her and then she mails that to us.
2. I will then get a second letter from her commander telling me what unit she is in and proposed graduation date.
3. Once I get that I should make reservations for that date with the assumption that she will pass her requirements.
4. I can also start writing her but she is the only one who can tell me the actual address.

Am I somewhat on target with this?
It is a little confusing what I can and cannot do!

Thanks a bunch :
"New" Mom Dee
thanks so much!!!

Okay...you'll get a form letter with her grad date, address, ship/division # and other info...including a few handwritten lines from her. This will be about a week to two weeks after she leaves and delivered by USPS.

She will also send you her "kid in a box" it will have all her belongings that she can't have there. Rarely is there a note in there but still check all her pockers. It will be delivered via FedEx...unless you live in Alaska, Hawaii or overseas....then it is delivered parcel post. Sometimes you get this first and sometimes you get the form letter first.

You can book hotel early, I recommend you wait a bit for the flights.

You can call the recruiter 72 hours after she leaves for the address but it is usually the temporary address for when they are in processing and usually will be different from the permanant address but wrrite, write, write...everyday. It may take a while for her to get her letters but she should get them all.

It usually takes about 3 weeks for you to get a real letter and she'll won't' get any mail for about that long. You also should get a "I'm still alive" call about 3 weeks or so after she gets there...watch for the 847 area code and id is usually payphone
I have lots of miles stored up since I travel for work a great deal. I should have no problem getting a ticket. I am sure she will graduate on time - the physical part should be a breeze for her (former state champion cross country runner and former high school and Division I scholarship swimmer). Her biggest problem will be learning when to keep her mouth shut!! LOL
Injuries in boot camp are common, even among those who are already very fit. Shin splints and knee injuries happen frequently, and the number of illnesses that go around boot camp is terrible. Everyone brings whatever is going around their hometown and "shares" with their new shipmates. It's worse in the winter, in addition to flu season a lot of recruits are injured after slips on the ice. All it takes is a bad ankle sprain to be sent back a week or two.
