Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

You need to wait until you get the letter confirming your recruit's PIR date. Airlines are the problem, not hotels.
Get your flight within a week or two after getting your letter. The longer you wait, the more expensive it gets. Some people recommend getting transferrable tickets, but in some cases it is more expensive to pay for the transferrable tickets than just paying for a change in reservations. Fly into Milwaukee, Wisconson, it's about $100 cheaper than flying into Chicago, and the same distance from Great Lakes.
If you have the time, take Amtrak. It's cheaper for tickets and if your recruit's PIR date is delayed, it is much cheaper to change reservations.
Local hotels are so used to dealing with boot camp families, they have great deals up to a few weeks before your PIR date. One hotel, the Navy Lodge, never raises its prices, but since it is both Navy-run and the closest hotel to PIR Hall (it's actually on base, in family housing) it also fills up quickly.
The hotels there are also very good about letting families change reservations with no extra charge. About 1 in 5 recruits do not PIR with their original division, due to injuries, illness, or problems with swim test, academics, or fitness.
sboli - Just rememeber, more that likely you can get an airline gate pass to hang out with him. It's great closure to see the plane leave. Sad, but at least it's closure.
Here is the rule for TSA with military family members gate pass... You get the pass at the ticket counter of the airline he is leaving on. (ie for example the United ticket counter)

Military Family Member Gate Passes
Family members who want to accompany a military service member being deployed to the boarding gate or greet them returning from deployment at the arrival gate may receive passes to enter the secure area of the airport.
Interested military family members should contact their air carrier representative at the departure/arrival airport for proper local procedures.
My son has a ship date of Dec 28th but as of yet haven't gotten word of his earlier date the week of Dec 12. Well, he might know but just hasn't passed it along. I'm getting excited for him and I think he is too. Going Nuke so he's in for a long, tough ride but he will do it! Look forward to this journey with you other moms!
