Hello,
Does anyone know how much time our son will be able to spend with us after graduation? He is staying in Great Lakes to go to school for Gunner's Mate. Does he get hours? Days? Also, are we allowed to bring him anything, like his phone?
Thank you!

Since your Sailor is staying in GL, you will have a short time with him (anywhere from 15-60 min.--he'll know) following PIR and then he will return to his ship to be transported to the TSC. He will call you after he checks in at the TSC, which takes about 3-5 hours, and will have Liberty until Liberty expires that night at 10, but you must drop him off about 30 minutes before to give him time to get to his barracks. He will be able to take his cell phone back with him that night. Then he will have daytime Liberty (pick up 6:30 or 7 am and drop off 9:30 pm or so) each day of the weekend. There is no overnight Liberty PIR weekend. Have him bring his black backpack on Saturday and maybe Sunday so he can take things back with him. He can take his laptop and a few other things, favorite underwear are a frequent request because the guys are ready to be out of their "tighty whities" by this time.
Arrive the day before PIR and go to Sarge's Meet and Greet (go to Events on the right and move the calendar to the day before PIR and then locate it) and maybe part of another Meet and Greet (Ramada Inn has one and sometimes Flanagan's) and then plan to leave late Sunday or on Monday to have the most time with your Sailor.
You will want to check out GM Mom's, Great Lakes A School Q&A and GL A-school moms. You can check out the Training Support Center (TSC) Great Lakes Facebook Page.
Is your son at the RTC? If so, when is PIR? You can go to http://www.navyformoms.com/forum/topics/groups-listed-by-pir-date and join the group for that. If he is still in DEP, be sure to check out Things to Do in the Last Month Before Your Future Sailor Leaves for... and also join the group for the month he leaves, which will be located at the bottom.
I see you have joined, Boot Camp Moms and New Members Stop Here; you may also want to join, or at least check out, PIR Reference Information. There will be a lot of great information and support for you in those groups as well as in the PIR group. Be sure to check out the Pages (found under the pictures of the Members) and Discussions within the groups. The info above about Liberty is in the Page, Liberty During PIR Weekend, within Boot Camp Moms.

Wow, thank you so much for all of this information. I really appreciate it.
Our son goes to GL on January 3rd. We are trying to figure out how long his A school will be etc...we have a lot of reading to do. I will go and check all of this other groups.
Thank you again!
I have that "A" School is 27 weeks, but that could be wrong. Also, some Sailors are on Hold for a while before classing up, so that adds time.
Here is the Fact Sheet for GM: http://www.cnrc.navy.mil/Graphic-Elements/Rating-Factsheets/GM-Gunn.... It says SSC (Service School Command), but I think it is now TSC (Training Support Center).
You are very welcome. Please join Boot Camp Moms. What will your SR's rating be? Perhaps I can help you find a group for that as well.
CTMom, I guess I should have put TMacs Mom before my reply since it gets a little confusing sometimes as to who a post is for. I think I have directed you to the groups you need for now.
