My son has a problem with his car registration. Any advice?

My son bought a car when he was stationed in San Diego. He drove it home and left it during deployment.  While he was gone, he paid it off and the tags expired.  The MVA in California sent his title to the base in San Diego.  They sent it back "return to sender".  He has to report to Norfolk next week and has no idea how to register his car.  The MVA in California said it could take up to one month to send him a new title so that he can get it registered. He was so proud of himself for paying it off, but I wish he had not!

Does he still have the title & registration from when he got the car?  He might be able to use them.  If it is all in his name I think this will work.  After all, all he is waiting for is the title.  It just shows proof that there is no lean on the car.

He does have the expired registration card, but he never had a title.  California is a "no title" state, meaning the title remains at the MVA until you pay the car off. While on deployment, he paid it off and the title was mailed to the base in San Diego.

In Ohio you get a copy of the title when you buy a car.  With that you can get everything you need.  Or can someone go to the title office and just pick up a new one, they should be able to look it up on the computer.  Of course he will have to pay for it.

did you look on the MVA website, some offer the service (for a fee) and they can overnite his title to him.

Kathy, Are you referring to the California MVA? We have never lived in CA and I do not really understand the no title state situation.  I will tell him to check the CA MVA website.  It would be great if they could overtnight it to him!

Thanks!
