I have looked everywhere on this website (I believe?) and I have yet to see anyone post anything about what we can or can't bring to PIR for our Sailors to take to A school, as far as any of their personal belongings from home (i.e. their cell phone, clothing, etc.)?  Can anyone give me some insight please?  I have only received one letter from my son and that was awhile back :o(.  I keep asking in the letters I have been sending hoping I would get a response but haven't thus far!  :o(  Any information would be greatly appreciated!  My son is on Ship 14 DIV 180.

Thank you!

Well, this probably won't help much but I believe on one of the Navy's actual sites you can find that info as long as you know where they will be attending "A" school. I'm sure one of the longer time members can help with where ever it is.Sorry not more help. I'd like to look at that myself.

This is more information than I had so thank you very much!  Prayers to you and your SR!  Take care!  :o)

Yippee!!! Just received my letter :-) My SR is Ship 9 Div 227. PIR 14 JUN 13.

My son is also in that division, although I think they are Ship 12 now.  My son's name is Alex.  Will you be attending Sarge's Meet and Greet?  Maybe we will see you there.

I have been wondering the same thing any info would be wonderful

Find a group for your sailor's rating (there may be a group for the A school for it, too) and ask your fellow moms there.  Plus you should join these groups anyway!  Lots of good info about what's in store for your sailor and you.

In these groups for moms of hospital corpsmen (rating (HM)  and the HM A school, this question comes up pretty frequently.  The most common answer there is that many parents head to the airport and hand their sailors their cell phones/laptop/tablet and a change of civilian clothes that can be added to their carryon as they head to A school.  These are things that can be mailed soon after they get to A school too of course; sending a USPS priority mail flat rate box with insurance and tracking is the best way.  They will also be buying incidentals they need, taking cabs and eating out too once they get to A school, so a Visa-type gift card is a nice congratulations gift and good idea to send along with them on the plane :)

Last but not least, don't send a lot of stuff to them during A school, as picking up mail is time-consuming, and they have to lug everything in seabags to their first duty station or ship stuff home, and they'll tell you it's a real pain.  Reloadable gift cards are really a great thing for them to have instead.  You can mail your great care packages once they get to their first duty station.

If any of you are moms of future corpsmen, please come join our groups and say HI!  And congratulations and welcome to the Navy family to you all  :)

My son has been at Goose Creek since Mar 9.  He didn't actually start "A School" for almost two weeks.  The only thing he took at the airport (Great Lakes) was his cell phone cause he had so many bags he didn't want anything at that time.  Now that he can text us daily, we have  been shipping boxes a few at a time.  They were not allowed to wear civilian clothes for almost 4 weeks.  First we sent his computer, then a couple weeks later a few things he requested, now almost 7 weeks later, he wanted his bedding, pillow (navy issue stuff is non personal), favorite tshirts, (he had to purchase new jeans because he grew in size!), personal preferred toiletries and gift cards he saved from high school graduation.  Oh yes, with every box he requested  "any homemade goodies" that we felt like sending! :)   Watch his facebook (or friend him/her) you'll be able to send misc messages cause you know they'll be on getting in touch with their friends back home!

They often need to buy new jeans because they have changed shape.

See PIR Day and Liberty During PIR Weekend. What will his rating (job/specialty) be? There ar groups for most of the "A" Schools and/or ratings and they may be able to tell you specific things that your Sailor may or may not have and when.

Okay:  Here is what I have found out.  At the airport, we can bring them their cell phones.  I think we are going to by him an Ipad (which is small) since his computer at home is huge.  I've also been told that almost all of the sailors going off to "A" school want their boxer shorts, so cell phone, IPAD, and boxer shorts are going to the airport with us when we see our sailor off to "A" school.  Also, someone posted a questionnaire that you can print out and send to your sailor to fill out and give you at PIR.  It's small so they can put it in their shoe. The questionnaire has all of the flight info on it for them, so you can meet up with them at the airport.  Also tells you what airport, what time the bus leaves RTC, etc.

PIR Day and Liberty During PIR Weekend has the info that you can put on an index card and send to your SR to give you following PIR to get the flight info.
