My sons PIR is 10/11/13 then on to A school in CT. (Or at least that is the plan). I am so overwhelmed by everything right now. Planning the trip to PIR, trying to learn as much as I can ( I am a member of a few other groups on N4M) about the Navy, working full time, missing him terribly,etc.... I can't even imagine what it will be like when I join all of the sub groups. Does it get easier or will I always feel like a newbie?

There is a N4M page, BESS and A-school Groton, CT. It is great. Also check FB for the page by similar name, and also FB page Loved ones of Groton...It will get easier. I feel like a newbie still, in some ways, and son just graduated BESS and starts ATT tomorrow. I feel a little knowledgeable about some things because hubby was on a sub, and I am from Groton.

Peace, and congrats and many thanks to your son!

Annette

OK, Groton, CT Sub school and A school is the N4M page. BESS and A school is the fb page

BESS? ATT? Help.....what do those mean? LOL. Is A school my sons next step after BC?

BESS=Basic enlisted sub school. ATT= apprentice technical training. Then he will have techno and A school (my son) BESS is after BC, it is 8 weeks long.

So my son doesn't actually go to A school right after BC?

Sub School will be the first school he gets. For my son, who will be a sonar tech, which was picked the first week of sub school, he is now doing ATT , which he said is all electronics. After that he does techno (he was not clear on what this is, hubby thinks maybe some hands-on training) and after that ST A school. Different rates have different training, and some finish some of their schooling elsewhere. My son will do all of his in Groton.

My son's first school was in Meridian, MS. He spent like 8 weeks there, then went to Groton where he received the rest of his training for the sub.

Interesting. What's his rate? I just presumed all went to Sub School before any of the other schools. I just learned something new.

He's a Yeoman 3rd class right now. I was thinking it was the other way around, that they went to their specialist school first THEN to the sub school. They're all probably different.  He LOVES being in the Navy. GREAT choice for him.

What determines where they do their training? So A school is the last step?
Are there certain states that my son may be getting his training in?

It does get better, kiddo. although for me it took awhile. I would love to send you a private message that further details some of the experiences I had while my son was in sub school. You may find them helpful as far as what to expect, even after the guys get through school, get on the sub, and are working on earning their "dolphins." I will send you a friend request, and, if you are interested in what I have to share, accept it and then I can private message you!!  Keep your chin up, my friend.
