Bahrain- Cell phone service, transportation and apartment leases in Bahrain

My son is transferring to Bahrain for 18 months and I was wondering about cell phone service and apartment leases while he is there.  Should he wait until he gets there to get a sim card for his current phone or is it better to get a contract service there?  How expensive is it, mostly for texting while there?  Or should he get a sim card here before he leaves?  Also, should he take furniture or are most apartments furnished? If nothing else, should he take his bed?  Also, he was thinking of selling his car before leaving rather than taking a car. Is it easy to get around there?

If single, they live on base in a barracks, and I do not think they are letting dependents move over right now.  That changes all the time.  If so, the housing office would help with housing, and yes, most are furnished.  They do recommend bringing his own mattresses.  (not for the barracks though).

His phone probably will not work there even with a sim card, and if it does, the roaming/overseas charges are ridiculous. He can suspend his current service and get a phone locally.  There are free apps for texting, and there is wifi.

His orders will specify if he is authorized a vehicle shipment.  Personally, I wouldn't do it if he is single.  They have shuttles and biking is great on a small base.  Anyway, as with most overseas bases, it is easy to pick up a used car from someone who is leaving.

Honestly, he should have a sponsor to answer these questions for him, has he contacted his command to ask for someone to guide him?

Have him E-mail to get a sponsor (sailor already there who will help your son know what to do):

Forget the cell phone. Use Skype, Facebook and email on a laptop. Its free and internet access is readily available.

There are totally furnished apartments and villas within walking distance of the base. My Sailor rented a car the few times she wanted to venture out around the island. Note: Traffic is crazy.
