Join groups!  Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself!  Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility. 

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.  

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

**UPDATE 4/26/2022** Effective with the May 6, 2022 PIR 4 guests will be allowed.  Still must be fully vaccinated to attend.

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

Time between promotions

I've been trying to find an accurate timeline on how long it takes a sailor (at a minimum) to get promoted up from E-5 to E-6 and came across this...

Here's the minimum time required to advance (no guarantee).

E-1 to E-2 9 months
E-2 to E-3 9 months
E-3 to E-4 6 months
E-4 to E-5 12 months
E-5 to E-6 36 months
E-6 to E-7 36 months
E-7 to E-8 36 months
E-8 to E-9 36 months

Can anyone tell me if this is correct?

I was not aware that the Navy could push you out of your current job. Will they let you take a new job that based on your ASVAB score you are overqualified for?

P.S. Yeomanette sounds like they are just making them smaller.

The Navy is just like any other employer: There is no job security.

Where do you find the information on how many tested? My daughter is still in training for CTT-AEF. Do you know anything about that?

The quotas for CTT show that 214 Sailors passed the test for E-4 and all 214 were advanced, 100%!  The table also shows the for the previous advancement cycle only 93 were advanced to E-4, 41.7%.

It takes the average Recruit 1.6 years to make CTT3 (E-4).

The flip side of this is that there is a maximum time that a Sailor can sit in a pay grade without advancing before s/he gets booted out of the service. Its called High Year Tenure or HYT.

The years in this table are total years active duty in the Navy.

Example: An E-5 with 14 years of service will be separated because s/he hasn't advanced to E-6, even if the problem is low quotas. It clears out the dead wood so the qualified youngsters can advance.

Yes, I was familiar with the ERB rules. Seems like it would be Unconstitutional or something. at least when corporations try this, they get sued. 

Considering there is only one MCPON, that seems to make that goal fairly clear.

Curious about something else. My wife tells me her brother was a barber in the Navy. I suppose the larger ships at sea for a long period of time needs barbers, but what rating does that fall under? Does one sign on for this or does one get assigned to this via undes?

SH, Ships Serviceman.

Barber, ship's store, laundry, tailor shop and stocking the vending machines among other tasks.  5 weeks of A school at Meridian, MS and lots of on-the-job training.

That's pretty amazing. So, a young person can get a job at the local Quickie Mart, or join the Navy and get paid more, get VA benefits, and possibly a pension and a better chance for promotion.

The Navy will offer the SH a lower probability of being shot and robbed than the Quickie Mart. And toss in formal training with small arms!
