SOOOOOOO i just wanted advise for those that have gone to a PIR. What I mean is, how early should I get there? Im staying at the Navy Lodge, so should I just use their shuttle to avoid driving?  ANY other tips that you would give for those that are getting ready for our SR PIR.

Thanksssss!

The Navy Lodge does not have a shuttle.

Instead of waiting in the very long line to get on base, drive in the middle lane and tell the officer directing traffic that you are going to the train station. You can park there for $2 and walk on to base much quicker (the walk is about 50 feet to the gate). Figure to be there an hour and a half in advance at least.

The Navy Lodge provides a free bag breakfast on the morning of PIR. They don't exactly advertise it, but it is there for you.

Go to Sarge's meeting the night before for some very good tips.

We took the shuttle from the Navy Lodge in September, so unless it's changed since then...

We will be staying at the Navy Lodge for my daughters PIR on May 1st. What is the shuttle information? How much does it cost and how often does it run?

We were going to drive and then opted for the shuttle, which was great. A lot less stressful and the driver was a great guy.  When you check into the hotel they tell you about the shuttle and let you know what the available time slots are.  I believe we took a 7 and it was more than enough time. Take seat cushions if you have them, the metal bleachers are cold and hard. The shuttle dropped us right off at the gate and picked us up in a designated place when we were ready. Went back to the hotel and decided to go to lunch (our sailor was staying in GL so he was processing) but half way through lunch he called and said he was done and to come get him. I no longer cared about my barely eaten food and rushed out! LOL So if your sailor is transferring over to TSC, don't stray too far because the wait can be shorter than what they tell you.

Go to Sarge's Meet and Greet the night before if you are able.  Him and his wife do a wonderful job and it is great to get to meet in person the other parents and families of the sailors who gave support during the 9 weeks!

Make a sign for your door.  It was so much fun to walk around the Lodge and see all of the doors and creative pictures, etc. of all of the sailors.

Have a plan but be flexible.  It's all about the time you spend with them and not about anything you do.  My son just said his only mission was a new phone and FOOD (and changing immediately into boxers) and beyond that just tell him the POD (plan of the day) and he was good to go. :)

OK, well things have changed in the last few years I guess. They used to sell seat cushions there with the Great Lakes logo.

We also had to wait four hours for our son to get processed in. Then he had to walk to the gate which took a while longer.

If your sailor is staying in GL, have him go with you to get a pass so you can drive onto the base the next day to check him out. Will save a lot of time.

hahah - got my list from my SR - he wants his phone, Hot Cheetos and boxers.  hahahahha!  loves it!

I found the website for Navy Lodge... Why is it the best place to stay?

Also, are the sailors allowed to go there or not?? Will Sarge's shuttle pick you up and return you there?? Hopefully it's not already full!
Thank you!

Good Morning! How will you know the date of Graduation? How much advance notice do they give you. Very new here. Our son leaves on 5/20/15

Gigi,

You will receive a Form Letter about 10 days after your Recruit arrives at Great Lakes. It will have information on graduation and his official mailing address, among other things. You can start researching travel and accommodations now, but don't finalize your plans unit you have the letter.

Before that you will get a box containing his clothes and any personal possessions that he can't keep at RTC. But don't expect anything else inside.
