When our daughter started this whole adventure I had dreams of documenting every step, every event.  Of posting triumphs and disappointments.  Then reality. I haven't blogged for about a year, I haven't kept in touch with the women/moms I had met through this site.  And I'm sorry about that.

In 5 days she heads to the MEPS holding tank and the next day she'll be at basic.

I'm thankful this time is finally here. There have been so many milestones and "lasts".  Last Bluesfest she'll work, last job as a h.s. student, last time she'll sing in a Christmas concert, last swim meet, last drama she'll preform in, last dance (prom)...and then of course graduation.  She opted to not work the last month to spend time with friends & family...but it seems like she hardly had the time to spend.

I'm having a hard time accepting her rate (job) that she picked.  She had selected it with the option of testing into diving.  She was in great physical shape and was able to pass all the physicals but chin-ups (and she was up to 4 on those)....but then she took a week off when swim season ended...and it all went to pot.  She even lost her desire to test. So here she is and I'm bitter.

I haven't expressed myself to her in that way since it is her life, her decision.  And I want to enjoy the last weeks with her.  It's not worth fighting over.   But it's just hard and I don't think she understands all that it entails.  Or all the hard work she just "lazied" away.

On the PLUS side, we went to Great America for the first time EVER.  Her father had been promising for years. We were joined by friends & family and had the most perfect day!  The weather was warm, not hot.  We hit ALL the rides and she even had an hour to go to the water park area.  Spent the night at the Days Inn by Great Lakes...nothing fancy, but clean and close. Also a friend of hers joined this spring and will be at basic with her.  2 Flivver girls at basic...watch out world!

Expect me on more and I guess I better see if there's a group formed for her time in basic.  Let the adventure continue!

Be sure to check out the discussion, Things to Do in the Last Month Before Your Future Sailor Leaves for the RTC. I also suggest you join Boot Camp Moms (and loved ones) and begin checking out the Pages (found under the pictures of the Members) and Discussions there. What will her rating (job/specialty) be? There are groups for most ratings and/or "A" Schools and knowing that will help you to better plan for PIR weekend and connecting with others with loved ones with thesame rating may help you to understand her choice.

BTW, rate = rank for other branches or pay grade and rating = job or occupational specialty. Many confuse the two terms.

Thanks for the clarification on rate vs rating!  I've found her rating group and made a comment...seems that there will be some others going to bs at the same time...cool beans.  :)  I guess I just don't change gears as smoothly as I'd like.  When she said "diver" and was busting her butt and meeting the goals...I was excited & supportive.  Did a lot of research on here and other sites about it...and then she hit a wall and never broke through.  It's just "wha!", you know?  Again, thank you for the support & suggestions.  :)

ND is a very demanding rating and she would really have to push to make it in BC and in all the prereqs and not many who start don't end up with that rating, so she would have to be VERY committed to make it.

The Rating Information Card for CS can be found at https://www.cool.navy.mil/enlisted/rating_info_cards/cs.pdf. It indicates 9 weeks, but "A" School is 5-6 weeks after classing up. You will also want to check out the

Joint Culinary Center of Excellence Facebook Page.
