Agree :) stick to upbeat news & encouragement from home. Have family members or friends send mail too but be sure they get the message as well. also watch what you post in your PIR & boot camp moms group on N4M. BC RDCs (instructors) have been known to browse there, so don't write anything or post photos that could embarrass your recruit.

@ navyburn: thanx for the clarification about "the letter home". I've been curious as I like to plan ahead,if possible! I cried when I read the that your son told you to stop crying. I've been a hot mess and cry at the drop of a hat ...and my son hasn't even left yet!

@Reecesmom:I had that voting question, too. It is too late for your son now...but call the County Elections office and request an absentee ballot for the next election cycle, My son leaves on Monday (YIKES) but he took care of his voting by mail already.

Thanks again Navy mom friends. I wonder if anyone has an answer to this question...my son, who is in bootcamp until Nov. 5th, turned 18 and registered to vote in our county before he left. Elections are next Tuesday. Do recruits get to vote? If so, how does he request a ballot?

Hi Ladies! Yesterday was an emotional day for me. At church we said goodbye to my son's friend, who is going in the Air Force. Then, a "Celebration of Life" funeral, where we saw our nephew who leaves for Navy BC on Nov 9. Our son doesn't leave until March, but I sure felt it yesterday. Like you all I am very proud, but it will be hard to say goodbye.

To LindaB, Reece's Mom, and My Hero congrats on raising wonderful sons who want to serve our country. And know that you and they are in our prayers.

Reecesmom, that was Oct '07, as in October 2007 :) The time has flown by! He then graduated Corps School in February 2008. That was one freezing cold weekend. You can get email alerts for the weather there from Chicago TV, gets quite interesting in winter.
Myhero, you should be able to anticipate PIR as 8 weeks from his arrival. Check with the Boot Camp Moms group and/or your recruiter. It takes a few weeks before you get the invitation.

Reecesmom, you do not have too much longer to go!!! Just keep writing letters until the last week. That's what my son was counting on was those letters. They are just as excited with anticipation to see us as we are them. You will have breakdowns from now until then. At PIR I think I cried as soon as the ceremony started. Then when I saw him, the waterworks began. To me it felt like forever, until they called liberty. Then it was like I sprouted wings because I couldn't get to my so quick enough to squeeze the daylights out of him and give him a kiss. Just remember to take deep breaths and you are entitled to cry at any time!!!! My son is enjoying not being in boot camp but I'll let you know tomorrow how he's doing because it's his first official day of school. Hugs to you:-)

My son leaves in ONE week!! He is excited and I'm a case...I alternate between PRIDE &JOY and sadness. How soon after he gets to Basic do I find out when PIR takes place? I live in AZ and am a weelchair user so travel and accomodations take much planning.

Oh...Marcy...after reading your message again, it looks like your son completed Corpsman school already. The Oct. 7th date must have been in a different year?
Comment by Mary Jo-Mom of a Corpsman on October 24, 2010 at 9:52pm
Oh, thank you all so much. Sitting here reading about your experiences is filling me with excitement! I had one of my few "breakdown and cry" days today starting when songs were played in church that reminded me of all the years of attending church with four boys sitting by my side instead of just three. Excitement has now replaced sadness.

We have read all the suggestions from moms advising us to let our Sailor choose whatever he wants to do on our weekend together....even if it means just staying in the hotel. We are prepared for anything!

Marcy, how is your Sailor doing in Corpsman school so far?
Linda, please keep us updated on your sons experiences...
And Diane...maybe we will meet up at either the meet and greet or at the graduation!
