I love it!! Whatever it takes, right? There's a good 5 min video about the bootcamp experience on this site, produced by the Navy. Click on "Videos" in the top bar. You'll see "Featured Videos" at the top. Click the small "View All" link at the far right (under "Navy Racks - USS Sampson"). The Navy Racks - Bootcamp video is third one down on the right.

That is wonderful! Nothing like it, is there? Mine was home for Thanksgiving so I can't complain - but I surely miss him this week. Enjoy every second!

Just a heads-up - be careful about accepting "Friend' requests. The administrators of the Navyformoms site are warning about invitations going out from "Kayleigh Hall" and "Gloria Lopez" - both are fake. Always check the person's page before accepting - in both cases, the red flag is they have no personal info, yet tons of people have accepted the invites nevertheless.

I'll bet; I would have done the same. Will you be going to this AZ Moms get-together on Jan. 9th? I just joined this group too.

My son's experience with recruiters at the outset wasn't great either, so we went 'shopping' for one we felt good about. It's an ongoing relationship as much for us as for the recruits as there are so many ongoing questions that continue beyond boot camp, so put in plenty of chocolate or nuts or whatever!

That's a shame. I'd take the station Chief cookies and become his new best friend! You really need that contact. I'm betting Drew is busy and is racking up a list of friends. My son's letters were filled with the word "cool" - he even liked the food, especially the lasagne - not what I expected! There's a good book you can get on Amazon if you want to track his experience day by day: it's called Honor, Courage, Commitment: Navy Boot Camp" by JF Leahy.
And for fun, go to http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/weather and sign up for weather alerts via email, so you can keep up on that delightful Great Lakes weather!

Hi 'Drew's mom'! I think your son's recruiter is your most direct source - though it sounds like you didn't have much time to develop a relationship with him/her! Or speak with the person in charge of that recruiting office. They'll give you his address and estimated PIR date, though that date's not guaranteed till he's closer to graduating. Then he'll send you an invitation with the date and info about the Great Lakes area. Also - your son will be encouraged to write home each Sunday. My son joined in August '07, and I had zero background with the whole thing too! However, he was in DEP for about six months, so I peppered the recruiters with questions all the way through - and still am in contact with them occasionally, but just to keep in touch. Let me know if this helps.
