Julie & Lori: Have you both heard from the ombudsman for the Reagan? They are in charge of getting all your info from the command and passing it on to the base. The FRG group is in charge of planning and carrying out all the homecoming events. The FRG & ombudsman will give you all the info you need to get on base, which pier (I believe the Ronnie docks at North Island).

Hi Lori - My daughter and son both were on ships that came back from deployment into San Diego. Your name will be on a list at the front gate (your sailor will have turned your name). Make sure you get there in plenty of time. The later you arrive, the longer you will have to walk to the dock. The wait will be long, so bring a folding chair and something to eat/drink. (sometimes the ship will provide food for the waiting families, but not always.) Make a sign, or two, so that your sailor will see it when the ship arrives. Sometimes it is hard for you and your sailor to find each other, the sign helps. There will be a band playing on the dock. As the ship approches the dock, you will see all of the sailors on the deck (along the edge, in their whites). There will be a wreath on the front of the ship (tradition.) You will get to see the tug boat guide the ship into port. The first person to come off of the ship is the Capt. The second is the person who got the most bids (or raised the most money, or something) on the ship. This person will get to come off and greet their family. (It is an honor to do that). Then the sailors will go below (most of them will) and change clothes. They will then disembark the ship. Whether your sailor will have time off depends.....half of the ship will get the first two weeks off after deployment and the remainder of the ship will have the following two weeks off. Sometimes a sailor can only leave the ship for a few minutes becasue they are on duty at the time the ship gets back and will need to remain on duty. They can probably have you come onboard to say "hi: but it will be brief. I hope this help!

Hi Trisha-Ashley-mom - thanks for the info about Groton. I have been there before, so I know what you mean by historic! The Mystic Aquarium is terrific. Did you get to eat at Mystic Pizza? Do you have a son in the sub force? If so, what ship?

The boat is the submarine the USS Missouri - the christening will occur in Groton, CT on 12/05

Dawn: Call your son's recruiter and find out if you can go to the airport. If you're allowed to go to the airport you will need to ask security for a pass to go beyond the security checkppoint. It's done all the time and should not be a problem. Phx airport does have a USO. Not sure about them giving you the info you're looking for but it's work a call.

From Maricopa it looks like you take Highway 347 to I-10 and then into Phx. So I think you'd still be closer to the east side of Phoenix. Okay, Phoenix moms, jump in here.

Sandy: Are you closer to the east side of Phx or the west side of Phx. If you take I-10 to Phx, you would go through east Phx before reaching the west side of Phx.

Let me look at a map and I'll answer your Maricopa question.....
