Letter # 1 they are still in a state of shock. Can't wait for letter #2. Mine started out with "they lied to me,,,,I hate this etc etc" Letter # 3 was more back to normal.

Maureen, Do not give up! Keep writing. He will realize how much he misses and respects family after a while. A letter, or phone call, will come. I know this is hard, but be patient. Service Members are all told how family is important. They will see their shipmates writting, receiving letters, calling, etc. He is away from home (probably for the first time) and he feels grown up. in charge. The key is to be patient. I know, that is easier said than done, but things will get better.

Again, I am so sorry. And I don't know what to say except that I am praying for you and him.
Maybe another mom has some advice on PIR.

blyswmn, it's a reflex reaction. When they enter the Navy the command takes the place of Mom so to speak. Some kids have a harder time than others, same with parents. So it may seem mean at times but I truly think it's just a "Change of Command". Us to them (The Navy)

I'd say that boot camp will make or break him. they don't take kindly to sailors who can't deal with authority. I'd say if he is still there, he is doing good. I worried about that myself.
I wanted to give up on him so many times, but his dad wouldn't let me. and I am happy that I didn't. Even our visit last week, had a few issues, but I stood firm with him. We are not ever going to agree with everyone, but it's how we handle the disagreements that make the difference. It's our action, not reaction. So keep writing short letters to him. they want mom in their life even when they say they don't.
are you planning to go to his PIR?

Maureen, I am so sorry about the troubles with your son. Here is a big hug from me. I kicked mine out of the house in 12-05 after my husband had double bypass surgery and he became so rude to me. My stress level reached it's peak and out he went.
I am happy to say we have repaired the relationship. Boot camp will grow them up. especially if they have authority issues.
I am encouraged that he gave you a card, even if he wrote mean things. Hang in there moms.

blyswmn: I noticed a marked chance in my son's behavior leading up to shipping out. I think they have a lot of anxiety and get very cranky. Let's hope your son was reacting to the stress he's feeling. You should get your first letter in 2 - 3 weeks.
Call his recruiter in a couple of days and get his address in GL and start writing him everyday. You will be is only connection to the outside world for the next 2 months. My son was interested in sports, so I copied and pasted the sports stories for him and I also found some great jokes on the internet. Since we both like to talk about the weather, I gave him a weather report everyday. They just want to hear about all the little things that are going on in your life. If I wrote that same letter to my son now he'd think I was crazy but he sure enjoyed them while in boot camp.

Did you ask your Sailor if he ordered it along with the Keel? If he didn't order it during boot camp you can order it from the NEX website in Great Lakes.
