Mary,

We are so delighted that you will be attending our get together this coming Saturday.
I'm getting the guest bedroom freshed up. Will Steve be joining you??? Let me know what time your flight will arrive and I'll have a driver meet you.
I can't begin to tell you how much we are looking forward to seeing you!

Of course we have a gathering in Great Lakes on Thursday as well to celebrate our newest group of Sailors!
Be sure to check the "Event" schedule for your state, if you don't see one planned...turn on the coffee and invite a new friend - there seems to be a Navy Mom every where now!

Hi Missing, welcome! When I was in Hawaii, I believe I saw a banner welcoming the Columbia home. That was last Oct. I was there to get on the Lincoln for the tiger cruise.
Are you coming to the Tucson potluck on the 24th? You too Lori.

that's a great idea Joyce. we had to wait until the form letter and it was wonderful to get that!
Teresa, this is all such good advice. I wish I knew about this site when Ben went in. He left in Feb. And what he said when he 1st wrote: it's cold here, boy is it cold here!!!!! We laughed so much. He is a southern AZ baby and that was a shock to his system.

Talk. Talk about anything. Tell how much you'll miss her and how you'll write EVERYDAY. And you'll have family members and friends write. Does she want a going away party???
Get online and do a search for "Navy boot camp schedule". It gives a day by day breakdown of what she'll be doing. The more info she has the less she'll worry. I was "feeding" Matt Navy Boot Camp info up to the minute he left and he didn't ACT like he was listening. But he was. And he was glad he knew what was going to happen from the minute he left for the airport. Matt had a hard time sleeping (anxiety) the night before he left, so I gave him some benadryl. He was still tired the next day and that's exactly how they want them to arrive at GL. They put them in a very warm room for 24 hours and dare them to fall asleep. When you get your daughter's "civies" in the mail, notice how her pants will be rolled up (she will be in the hot room getting ready to chance into her Navy sweats). The Navy figures our children have been keeping strange hours (like sleeping till noon....) so the first thing they want to do is break them of their bad sleeping habits.
You reassure her she'll do great. Her confidence is more than half the battle. And tell NOT to stress at Battlestations!!!! NO ONE FLUNKS BATTLESTATIONS!! It's another mind game the Navy plays with them. Her RDC (Recruite Division Commander) will become the most important person in her life for 8 1/2 weeks. Matt loved his RDC, said he was the funniest guy he'd ever met.
I hope this eases your mind and please let me know what else I can do to help BOTH of you get through this.
Oh, one more thing. It's a lot harder on us then on them. They keep them so BUSY they don't have time to miss anyone or anything. On the other hand, we do! :) Blessings to both of you...
