And Cathy,
even if you do have headaches getting to PIR, it is worth every second. When you see your sailor march in with his group, you will melt. Bring lots of kleenex. And some cash. At Ben's PIR, there was a souvenior table set up in a hallway, but it was cash only. That's where I bought my "dixie cup".

I've stayed in 3 Navy Lodges and they are really nice. O'Hare isn't all that bad to fly into.
I am wondering if GL has the help of the USO. You might ask someone.
When we flew to HI for tiger cruise, USO at the airport was the headquarters. The ship sent buses for us. And if you have any problems, the USO office is still a good place to chill out and get help.

Vickie:
I stayed at the Navy Lodge and really liked it. The rooms were really big and modern and very clean. And it's in a very quiet neighborhood really close to RTC. For the price you can't beat it.

we heard that Ben didn't have to check in at night either, but when we got there, he had to sleep in the barracks. We stayed at a Quality Inn not far from the entrance to the base.

And I just watched the commissioning of the USS George H. W. Bush on Fox news. Very inspiring!

I meant 1 mile north of the airport, not the freeway.

I am from Milwaukee. When Ben graduated from BC, we drove to my parents house to see them. It was 48 miles from the base to their house, which is 1 mile north of the freeway.
There is a nice freeway from Gen Mitchell Field (airport). It can get crowded once you hit Illinois and weather could be a concern. But it's usually about a 1-1 1/2 hour drive.
Have fun!

Milwaukee is about the same distance. I'd fly into there if the tickets are cheaper. The tickets were more when I flew back last April. There's a freeway from Milwaukee right into Great Lakes.

From O'Hare, it's very easy to get to Great Lakes. And if you shop around you can get a great rate on a rental. I flew from Tucson to O'Hare. But if there is a big difference in the ticket price I wouldn't hesitate to fly into Midway. Just make sure you get early flight.

It was a great letter-even my husband cried. And to think, there were sailors who would've had nothing. Makes my heart ache.
