Merry Christmas from Tucson, AZ. We woke up to rain this morning.

I added the poem "A Sailor's Christmas" in a blog post on my page. I hope you get a chance to read it.

Hi Julie,
welcome back to AZ. I am so glad that you had a safe trip and got to see Cory's base. I was so excited the 1st time I stayed in a Navy Lodge. they are nice.

p.s. carry lots of water and snacks. It helps. Ray and I have found one of the best lunches to get is at McDonalds. We love the grilled chicken salads. They are usually ready and can be served really quick. Plus they are pretty cheap. $4.19 to $5.00, depending on the area. Their bathrooms are usually in good shape, their coffee is the best. cheap, hot and consistent. And our road trip treat is their ice cream, don't eat it any other time. and no, I don't work for McDonalds.
We save the lengthy/bigger meal for supper, just before we stop for the night. Cracker Barrels are good for that, although they can be very busy. By the way, there is always a gas station wherever there is a Cracker Barrel. Did you know that? A man at church gave us a CB map showing their locations and gas. That way we are full when we got to a room. Get ready for bed and just chill until sleep takes over.
Bring any kind of handwork too-I love to crochet and get alot done in the car. save some room in the back seat to stretch out if possible. I love a road trip, can you tell?

Hey Julie,
you can do this! My husband and I are big road trip fans, so bring along favorite music, books to read, a pillow and blanket for naps in the car. Change drivers every couple of hours if possible. It helps to get out and stretch and keeps the circulation moving in your legs.
I live in Tucson, so we always take the southern route, which I am alittle surprised that you aren't. In Sept 2006, we moved our daughter-in-law to Virginia Beach (Ben is at Oceana) and we each had to drive a car. It was 2250 miles from here.
How many hours/miles do you plan to drive each day? Make it manageable, but drive long days and have more time at the end of your journey to enjoy the Beach (that's what Ben's squadron calls the area). Ray and I usually drive 13 hours a day while on the road, cause we'd rather get there and have more time at our destination. Do you plan to sightsee along the way? a short diversion is always good too.
I'll pray for a safe journey for you and please let us know when you arrive and your progress along the way.

Pamela,
I'm sure that he will. And more importantly, you will be blessing his buddies that he shares a room with also. Ben's cubemates shared his packages with him. At least they told me they did. You might want to tuck alittle something with each name on it in the stocking. I know they would enjoy that. Just a thought.
For the 4th of July, I made each of the guys a patriotic pillowcase. That way they could celebrate their birthdays with the country's. I did try to bake something special, but the peach muffins took a month to get there and they were moldy! Ben's triple chocolate cake was stolen out of the box by the postage service-I've learned, it is important to use the flat rate post office boxes.
Anyway, I got a personal note from each sailor thanking me. 2 said they didn't have pillowcases and the 3rd I had never met and he couldn't believe that I would do that for him.
They appreciate anything from home.

Thanks! I sent Ben a box every other week. I would look for deals and just keep collecting. I actually called all of that "party in a box" but tried to "theme" them a little.
When we took a 3 week road trip this summer, I asked each family we saw to contribute something to it. Regional, personal-1 granddaughter baked cookies.
I sent boiled peanuts from Florida cause my step son loves them. Salt water taffy from South Carolina, a giant pickle from Texas. That kind of thing. He really liked that, as did his cube mates.
I mailed him one recently as I kind of missed sending him a package. He told me that how much he loved getting them. Remember to get the military boxes-cheaper postage and they really do hold alot. 70 lbs for 1 price.
If anyone of you sew, I have another idea for you.
