I wish I was close enough to go down there, I'm 1400 miles away in Phoenix, AZ. and it is close to 4 hour flight. Barefootie that is ok, I'm just sorry to hear that. If there is a will there is a way and I am sure you will find one. I thought if they have duty once it is over they have the option to go. I may be wrong but I sure hope he is able to leave.

I agree. We talked at length about it but speaking with an adult I left the ball in my sailors court

@Phoenixmom, they will have to keep some for "essential personnel" so not all will leave. However, I would guess that almost all students would be able to, and the base would be manned by those stationed there. Not sure about though. Another question for Anti M. :-)

I read somewhere about a program where sailors might be "adopted" by local families rather than stay on base. I'm not sure how that works, or it is just for a day for Thanksgiving or Christmas day. Something to look into if your sailor has to stay on base, though.

I’m sorry but I only know my sailor’s situation, I am not sure of the others. I thought I understand they have the option if able. I was going to book a flight to meet me on the 22nd but was told not sure what time stand down starts

I know......fortunately, my husband and I may be able to take some time and go out there, but others cannot do that.  We live 8 hrs away so technically we could drive out.  I would hate for him to use all of his vacation but it is up to him.  Whatever he wants to do!

Mom of two I completely understand what you are saying, It is bad enough he my son will be there for thanksgiving but he said he will be fine, but for Christmas my heart would hurt if he cant come home.

So are you saying not everyone will be able to leave? is there a reason as to why? That is so sad, I cant imagine. So sorry to hear that.

Comment by barefootie on October 3, 2017 at 1:17pm
Sadly mine and others have been told it’s really going to be unpleasant to stay which in turn has caused some to use and borrow to get out during stand down
Comment by mom of two on October 3, 2017 at 1:11pm

I do NOT want him to borrow.  He should have enough for a week at least by then, so he will only take off what he has.  I told him not to borrow, so.....we shall see!!!  I am anxious to see him, however, I don't want him to have a "bad" feeling staying their either......It's a while off, so we have time to think about what he wants to do until then????  We shall see.....lol
