If you are staying at the Navy lodge cynthia5124 they have movies to borrow at no charge.  When my son graduated we spent a whole day watching movies and eating popcorn.

Hello,

My son graduated boot camp last Friday and is now at A School. Is this the correct group for me?

Any suggestions "what to do in Great Lakes" during a rainy weekend?

Even in the fleet, there can be long delays for one thing or another.  For the most part, the Navy is not fast paced and exciting.  Cleaning, paperwork, maintenance, it all is needed, but is not glamorous, and can be downright dull and mundane.  Your new sailors must find ways to constructively fill their liberty time, be it going to the gym or volunteering, or even games and reading.  There is a reason the work days at sea are 12+ hours long, and there aren't really any weekends.  Staying busy is the key to staying sane, and out of trouble.

And yes, the amount of rumor and misinformation is astonishing.  The subject matter may change, but never the chatter or the eternal sea lawyers who have been in the Navy for a minute, yet know it all.  I am actually glad I didn't have the internet back when I was in!

Hi Bandmom,

Tell your SR to prepare for a lot of hurry up and wait.  My son sat around for 14 days before he started doing any classes. He got very discouraged because no one prepared him for that. There is a lot of misinformation that goes around as well.  Tell your son to only listen to the commanding officers information for its validity.  I have spent many late nights on the phone with my son helping him work through the discouragement hes experiencing.

My best wishes to all of you. I am going to visit my son this weekend because he is phase two now with overnight chit.  So excited to see him.

ellen0502 You are so right!! The anticipation was the same if not worse and our son was in the very last wave of new sailors to come to the gate!!!

Sethmom, I have no Idea what goes on at A School.  I just know that he will be there for quite awhile, and that we are close enough, that when he gets Liberty, he may be able to come home.

Congratulations!  It's a wonderful event, emotional event and a day you'll never forget!  Enjoy.

Thank you everyone for the information.  My SR's PIR is June 2.  It is getting close, and I am getting excited!
