This one is better for Yokosuka, it is a little hard to choose which packet to link to because I don't know his gaining command.  He should be requesting a sponsor as soon as possible.

I haven;t been to Guam, but I know a lot of people who have been there.  Beautiful, and humid.  Apparently the beaches and outdoor activities are amazing.  Expensive, as islands tend to be.

Hey, they joined the Navy to see the world, LOL.  I was raised in the Navy before I joined myself (and then married a sailor), so I am always puzzled by folks who join with the expectation they will be near "home".   I never had a hometown, so I guess I'm a little flexible on the concept, hehe.

I found some Welcome Aboard packets for Guam and Japan.  Specific commands often have their own versions, so I found a general one for Guam, and the one for the Ronald Reagan for Japan (there are a lot of commands in Yokosuka).  These will give some general information for newcomers.

Thanks for sharing your sailors' plans. My son is still in Great Lakes for a while, but it will be exciting to find out where he goes next!!! Anti M, thanks for your great advice :-)

He was very upset at first. Mainly because, like your sailor, it's very far from home. The more people he talks to, the more excited he becomes. So far all we are hearing is really great things. "It's Hawaii.... Just s little further west & less touristy." I am looking forward to somewhere warm to vacation!

How is your son handling the news?  Guam?  I am so sorry.

Anti M ...your advice is very good and thanks.

I am still processing this all.

Norfolk was my son's first choice as well. He leaves June 20th and will be spending the next 3 years in Guam. Anti M... thank you for mentioning that he should also get a passport. I never really thought about it but that is a very good idea! We will all go together to get passports when he is home next month.

Thank you for this.  I am trying to help him navigate this because he is really not happy about this being so far away when we thought he was going to be in Norfolk.

I was stationed in Yokosuka for many years.  It is south of Tokyo and Yokohama.  Lovely safe country, with a lot to do, friendly people, and amazing food.  He should apply for a civilian passport, especially if he will be on a ship.  He doesn't need one, but it will be priceless for leisure travel or if he is at sea and needs to travel for a family emergency.  You should get a passport too if you do not have one, Japan is a wonderful place to visit if he can't take enough annual leave to come home.

It is pronounced Yo-Ko-S'ka in case you were wondering.
