No, they usually do not let them take leave while on hold.  It has happened, but there must be a compelling reason and zero chance of a class starting up.  Besides, earned leave is limited, and many save it up to use after graduating school while en route to their first command, or for the holiday stand down.

Thank you Anti M for all the great information.

Another question:

If he is on hold in A school will he be able to use vacation time to visit home?

Ok day 3 for my son in "A" School... hes seems quite busy and is liking the new transition.

Comment by Anti M on July 14, 2015 at 8:47pm

@pat... he cannot get ahead academically beforehand, the way the instruction is structured, it is best to wait and take it step by step as the Navy wants it presented.  If he wants to participate in extra mandatory study sessions, he can do so when he begins classes.  Jumping ahead is discouraged as the curriculum is done in mods which build off each other.

To advance to E-3, he must be an E-2 for nine months.  If auto-advancement is written into his contract, he must complete school as directed and serve his time in service. Not a lot to do to jump ahead once they're out of boot camp. I belive IC is an auto-advance rating, so he should make E-3 and E-4 in a timely manner.

He begins classes when there are enough sailors who are going to be ICs to make a class.  He could be on hold for a while.  Actually, his training will be a series of courses, totaling 22 weeks.  It will take far longer than that , with holds and holiday stand down.

There is a great deal of hurry up and wait in A school.  This is a time to learn how to study, to stand watch, to be patient, to stay in shape.  MWR has a lot of good leisure activities for down times between courses.

Is there a facebook group as well. If so how do we join?  Is there a specific group or facebook group just for IC A school Great lakes?

My son's PIR was 7/10/15 and is now at Training Support Center Great Lakes A school and his rating is IC.  Would you have any information on what to expect.  When does he begin classes, the curriculum etc?  Also he is now E2.  What are the steps for increasing rank and what does he need to do for Phase 1, 2 & 3. If he does not start classes until next week what should he be doing to get ahead while he has this time available?  thank you.

The C school in Dam Neck is for the CWIS missile  system, AEGIS is in Dalhgren, and other weapons systems are in San Diego.

Comment by MsT on July 12, 2015 at 6:26pm

FC's may go to Sand Diego for C school also.

Comment by Alex's_Mom (Robin) on July 9, 2015 at 6:45pm
