I thought it would be great to get a group together of people who have a Gunners Mate in training or one on duty. I hope we can all give each other a little insight as to what is in store for our Navy Men and Women!!

Hi GM moms, I want to introduce myself. I am STG2 and I work in the barracks here in Great Lakes. My barracks houses the GM students. I just wanted to make myself available to you if you have any questions that your sailor can seem to answer for you.

My daughter's PIR was 4/6/12.  She says she should be done with A school around the end of August.  One of the first things she noticed in A school is how many "chunky monkeys" there were.  After 8 weeks of forced and scheduled workouts, everyone is on their own to stay in shape  in A school.  Fortunately, she likes running.  Bad thing is there is a Mcdonalds across from her ship!

dbarton- i remember the stage you are at vividly.  Hang in there - she has all the skills she needs to succeed!

Blondeshot- my son's PIR was 3/2/12.  I belonged to the group for his PIR date.  It got established a couple weeks after he left.  Watching all the the comments from everyone, I think it is important for her to be able to do the run, sit-ups and push-ups to pass the PFA.  Next, make sure she knows how to swim well enough to pass the swim test.  It was hard to watch the SR's not graduating because of these 2 tests.  Also, it would be good for her to study her ranks, etc.  He found an app for his phone that had a lot of information on it.  My son arrives at GL on Saturday from Charleston.  Unfortunately, nuke school didn't work on, but I am so glad he got re-ranked to GM.  We live about an hour from GL so it will be great having him close to home.

denise - when was your daughter's PIR?  Mine is 7/20...and I agree with getting in shape for BC - my SR was in DEP for 4 months and we had a personal trainer twice a week come to the house...so I think that is great advice to give...my SR says there are some girls in BC that can't even do one pushup - have to pass PFA to graduate!

blondeshot - my daughter is in GM A school now.  She was in DEP for 6 months before BC.  She said it really helped - both keeping her in shape and getting a leg up on knowledge/terms/etc. There is a group here for DEPers.  She said that the Chief said to her to show the guys how its done (there are only 4 females in her class) !

Hi blondeshot, congrats on your daughter's decision.  My son also signed up and left for bootcamp 2 months following his HS graduation.  He is currently in C school.   He was my first to leave the house so it was difficult for me when he left but he is happy with his choice and LOVES being a GM so I'm happy.  I don't know that I have advise for you but I'm willing to talk anytime.  I'll be happy to answer questions if I can.  Stay strong.

Hi ladies. I am not a mother, but I am a navy wife. :)

My husband has been enlisted since Nov of '10 and is currently deployed on the Vicksburg and just got word today that he is no longer Undesignated and is now a Gunner's Mate. :) I think he's pretty excited about it.

Naturally, I don't know much about this rate, so any info anyone feels like sharing would be much appreciated. Thanks ladies!

Thank you, all, she was a little worried right after she took the exam, thought she might not have done well. And then she had to wait almost 2 months for the results! But all's well that ends well!
