I thought it would be great to get a group together of people who have a Gunners Mate in training or one on duty. I hope we can all give each other a little insight as to what is in store for our Navy Men and Women!!

Hi everyone, I'm fairly new here.  My daughter graduated 4/8, indoc last week and on hold for A school for possibly 3 more weeks.  Been doing tons of watches and is beginning to get really bored, trying her best to stay positive but wants to start phasing up ASAP.  She's not the type to sit around and do nothing, especially after being kept busy with boot.  Any words of encouragement?  She is keeping in good contact with CPO's and stuff so hopefully they will continue to keep her pumped. Already learning that "hurry up and wait" Navy thing.

paybacks398,

That is par for the course.  THere are basic courses in all kinds of subjects they take while waiting to get in to A school.  Usually they are waiting until there are enough recruits in their field to make up a class.  Sometimes it takes longer than others, but he'll eventually get there.

My grandson graduated 3/11 and moved over for A-school.  He was on hold for a couple of weeks and I thought he had started A-school-but someone just told me he wasnt actually in A-school at the moment that he was taking some other kind of classes.  Can anyone explain this to me.  He told me he was taking his basic electrcity courses and I assumed that was part of his A-school.  Help!

No problem. Just a little insight. But merely only that, my view. Not necessarily what will always take place. Things change, and very quickly sometimes. I try and stay up by keeping in touch and up with things from several chiefs all over, not to mention staying active with our recruiting stations nearby. Keeps me from thinking about things I really don't want to linger on, besides working the many extra hours too! It is also a way of "paying it forward" that several of us began way back in this sites inception or beginning several years ago. Always glad to help. Remember, there is no dumb questions, just fire away...

Good information, thank you!

Comforts of home! Ah yes! However, word of warning. Once they move over to A school side, they must go thru series of phasing up (like earning privileges). They have some preliminary courses(one has since been eliminated) before they actually start GM courses. And they have to move a time or two...hence the warning. They have to carry ALL their belongs themselves. So best to not have too many personal belongings. Many have taken their sailors cell phones, laptop, civilian clothes (they aren't allowed to wear till in phase 2) etc and rent a storage area off base several blocks down.

Yes, he did battlesstations Thurs/Fri. We got our Sailor call Friday evening. He told us that he was to move 4/2 and then start school 4/4. He is definitely going to GM @ GL. Since we are travelling from PA and my brother lives in Chicago, we are available to hang. But it would be really nice if I could be sure what was going on. Also, he has a favorite pillow. That sounds silly, but is it something he might want or will he be tormented..... a laptop,an mp3 player, a cell phone. Are these things he will be allowed to have?

Yes, so easy!  :)  I've learned two things since she enlisted:  1) Things can change; and 2) Everything is hurry up and wait.  Makes things really difficult to plan.  I got stuck with a non-refundable airline ticket.  You can bet I won't do that again.  Savannah had an opportunity to be stationed in Washington aboard an aircraft carrier, but she wanted to be on a smaller ship, so she opted for Japan.
Comment by Kay(Daughter is a gunners mate) on March 26, 2011 at 1:13pm

My daughter is on the USS John C Stennis and they are based in Bremerton WA. We live across the state so she is able to drive home when they are in port. The Stennis is an aircraft carrier and she does not get to perform the jobs she was trained for as a GM. That is a bummer to her. Japan? God Bless her and all of our wonderful Sailors that are there! Isn't being a Navy Mom easy? Totally kidding!!!

BTW, they can be "grad n go" and have A school at GL (GM A school IS at GL) which only means directly after PIR they take their stuff and report on over to the A school side (up the hill), then usually have liberty. But not all GM's are grad n go at PIR. Some may remain across the road from RTC. Things always keep changing however, so always take thoughts with 'may change' in mind! Same goes for holds. Not always is holds there. Some go straight thru, others hold for months. This is typical here on out! Maybe yes, maybe no!
