I thought it would be great to get a group together of people who have a Gunners Mate in training or one on duty. I hope we can all give each other a little insight as to what is in store for our Navy Men and Women!!

my son  is in GM school in GL right now, it's difficult to keep up with everything that is going on.  The pass / fails for whatever reason.  The "I was to have today off and now I don't" things that we cant control I have elected to let them roll off my shoulder.  I work hard at not trying to figure out what he's doing or why, because no one can explain.  I try my hardest to be his main support group when he gets disappointed or discouraged.  I send care boxes because nothing says I love you better than a box from home.  I need to let go and let him grow up.  He knows where home will always be,  Wherever mom is......................that is the only thing I have control of anymore.  His term is "adulting" I said that's not a word , he said it is in my life.  LMAO

Thank you so much everyone! Trying to be as informed as possible :) My sailor is a reservist also Huggybear. That's great that your sons school was shorter, I wonder why that happens. Thanks again for the info!

Elizabeth, Welcome, My son's A school was not 27 weeks. His PIR was July 10th. He was on hold for a month then did his ATT school. Then his GM school. He finished on Nov. 30th and was home on Dec. 3. Mine is a Reservists so he didn't have to go to C school. Some who are active duty will have to get to C school but most likely not at GL. Hope this helps.

My son spent 80 some days on hold for A school. The Navy also extended his contract by 2 months because of the hold. The reserves usually get picked first for classes so get ready to wait it out

Definitely easier said then done for us newbies!

Your best source of information is your sailor.  Remind him that you aren't in the Navy, so you don't understand the lingo or ways of the Navy.

Elizabeth, my advice is to not overthink things or make plans till the last minute!  portside is so right--it's Navy time.  He belongs to the Navy now, not you or his family anymore.  That sounds harsh, but the Navy comes first in his life.  It's like a roller coaster ride, and you just have to learn to enjoy the ride.

Or class up, sorry!

Thank you so much for the info! Yes, gotta love that unpredictability, I am just happy that we have our communication back now and can discuss things, writing letters and waiting got tough! Also, so they have to phase up to begin A School? If so, what phase? Thank you again!

Hi Elizabeth! Welcome. If memory serves me, ATT does not count as part of the 27 week count. Also, your fiance' may be on hold after ATT and waiting to class up so don't depend on him starting A school on the 29th necessarily. One thing you'll need to get use to is he, and now you, are on Navy time - which is unpredictable. :)
