DEP-Leavin' for bootcamp in August

Information

DEP-Leavin' for bootcamp in August

This group is for N4M members that have a loved one leaving for bootcamp in August...I will leave the year open so that even future Deppers leaving in the month of August of any year can join...Lets share stories, information, concerns, and questions

Website: http://www.navyformoms.com/group/deppersinbutnotyet

Latest Activity: Jul 22, 2022

Hello everyone and welcome to the Navy!!! This Group was started for the loved one of DEPpers leaving in the month of August (although everyone is welcome).......What year you say? Well ......any year!

We are an extension of the group DEPpers/Future Sailors....in, but not gone yet- see the link above.

If you haven't been there, go there now....There is a ton of information that you will need and are probably dying for....like what to send with them to Boot Camp and BC videos! :)

So if you have general information and comments that will be helpful and/or encouraging for ALL new DEP/Future Sailor Moms, then leave it in that main DEPper/Future Sailors Group, but if you have August ship out issues/questions etc., need specific information, (or have some to share) or just want to talk to someone that is where you are, with a Recruit leaving for and arriving in BC in August, ...then this is the place to be. :-)

Remember, don't "miss 'em while you're with them!" :) Make the most of every precious moment together before they leave. This will be a big transition for both of you! We'll be here for you every step of the way...
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Things to do in the last month before your future sailor leaves (Click on the link.)

Once your recruit has arrived at RTC, the next stop here is to join the group Boot Camp for Moms (and loved ones)  Hangout and ask questions in this group until your form letter arrives.

***New news just out today (9/25/19) from the US Navy Recruit Training Command FaceBook page:
Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

Approx two to three weeks after your recruit arrives you will receive the "Form Letter". The form letter will include their Ship# , DIV #, their mailing address, PIR date, and the Security Access Form. The Security Access form needs to be completed and sent back to your recruit ASAP. Keep this letter in a safe place, it has the information you will need.

The date that is on the form letter is the official date for your Recruit's Training Groups PIR (graduation), Things can always change for an individual Recruit (due to illness, injury, failure to pass a final test etc.)! So, we always recommend that you plan, if possible, to purchase Refundable or Exchangeable plane tickets.

After you have received the form letter, join the group for your recruits PIR. There you can ask questions about PIR, training, hotels etc. Those groups will be posted in the Boot Camp for Mom's group.

Thanks for joining us. We hope you will realize you are not alone, and will soon make new friends, plus feel supported and encouraged! :)

**It is very important that your future Sailor be physically fit prior to shipping to the RTC (these are new standards beginning 1/1/2018) and that he be able to pass an initial run test. See Navy Sets New Physical Fitness Standard to Start Boot Camp. "The initial run standard is evaluated on the 1.5 mile run of the first Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) at boot camp. The initial run standard for male recruits will be 16 minutes 10 seconds and 18 minutes seven seconds for female recruits."

It dawned on me this afternoon, that even though I am at ease with Laurence being away, I wanted to call him and ask him how his first day was, but then I realized that his cell phone is already in the box and should be soon on it's way back to Texas.
I did call it to hear him say his name. I have each ring tone of my kids with them telling me to answer the phone. I stoped myself from playing his just to hear him talk to me. Oh, come on PIR! I'm ready!
I'm anxious to see if any of our kids are in the same division.

Well, last night before I fell asleep, I heard the phone ring, and it was Laurence. I could tell he was told what to say. He was telling me that he was there and safe and that I would be getting a box soon with his belongings. I could tell that he was not able to stray off the script. He used words that he would not normally say, but I went to sleep witha smile on my face knowing he called me, and not Dad, and he was safe. Now, I will wait for his address and start writing.
Good luck to the rest of our group still waiting.

Hi Tanya, I'm sorry to hear of your experience and hope the next call goes better for you, and that you can hang on in the meantime. I read a couple of comments about moms calling their kid's cell phones just to hear their voice on the voicemail recording -- and have to admit that I've done that!

I'm back at work today and it's funny when folks ask me about my "vacation" I need to be sure I have a tissue handy, and just deal with the weird looks that I get as I tear-up when talking about the swearing-in ceremony and his leaving for boot camp. At least here I can see that it's normal and there are others who understand how tough it is. Thanks to all for sharing your experiences and stories!

We were at our son's swearing-in at Sacramento MEPS this morning and I'm SO glad we went. We sent him with his cell phone and he was able to call, but it wasn't until he was there and just his really quick "I'm here" call. Now the wait begins... Can't wait until we have a division and then when we can start planning for PIR (but that's me getting ahead of myself again!). =>

MB Jane, I think it was hard with my son today, since he is fresh out of high school and just turned 18. My older son who is 20 leaves in Nov. I think since he is older and like your son, has had a hard time finding a job. The first year he was out of school, he was "finding" himself. I told him, he wasn't lost, I found him every afternoon on my sofa!! lol I think it will be easier to send him off.

Sue, I hate taking a day off, especially the 2nd day of school, but it was worth it! I plan to do it again for my next DEPPER in Nov! It was so touching to see all these young kids going off to defend our freedom!

My son, Laurence, called from the plane. I was so glad to know he made it to O'Hare. Ladies, thank you for all the advice. The best was, even though it will be sent home, send the cell phone. It made me feel better.

Molly, thanks for all you have done here! You will be missed, but I understand. Today was a big lesson in that. I had to watch my 18 year old son leave to go follow his life long dream.
If your son or daughter has not yet left, go to MEPS! I was touched by all the families who were there. I felt for those who were leaving without their families there. As they were lining up to load the bus, the recruits were told that if they have family, this would be the last time to leave. I saw so many worriied young faces, I went to the ones without family and gave them hugs.
Now I sit and wait for the call.
Thanks ladies. It was hard, but he is now were he wants to be.
