DEP-Leavin' for bootcamp in August

Information

DEP-Leavin' for bootcamp in August

This group is for N4M members that have a loved one leaving for bootcamp in August...I will leave the year open so that even future Deppers leaving in the month of August of any year can join...Lets share stories, information, concerns, and questions

Latest Activity: Jul 22, 2022

Hello everyone and welcome to the Navy!!! This Group was started for the loved one of DEPpers leaving in the month of August (although everyone is welcome).......What year you say? Well ......any year!

We are an extension of the group DEPpers/Future Sailors....in, but not gone yet- see the link above.

If you haven't been there, go there now....There is a ton of information that you will need and are probably dying for....like what to send with them to Boot Camp and BC videos! :)

So if you have general information and comments that will be helpful and/or encouraging for ALL new DEP/Future Sailor Moms, then leave it in that main DEPper/Future Sailors Group, but if you have August ship out issues/questions etc., need specific information, (or have some to share) or just want to talk to someone that is where you are, with a Recruit leaving for and arriving in BC in August, ...then this is the place to be. :-)

Remember, don't "miss 'em while you're with them!" :) Make the most of every precious moment together before they leave. This will be a big transition for both of you! We'll be here for you every step of the way...
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Things to do in the last month before your future sailor leaves (Click on the link.)

Once your recruit has arrived at RTC, the next stop here is to join the group Boot Camp for Moms (and loved ones)  Hangout and ask questions in this group until your form letter arrives.

***New news just out today (9/25/19) from the US Navy Recruit Training Command FaceBook page:
Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

Approx two to three weeks after your recruit arrives you will receive the "Form Letter". The form letter will include their Ship# , DIV #, their mailing address, PIR date, and the Security Access Form. The Security Access form needs to be completed and sent back to your recruit ASAP. Keep this letter in a safe place, it has the information you will need.

The date that is on the form letter is the official date for your Recruit's Training Groups PIR (graduation), Things can always change for an individual Recruit (due to illness, injury, failure to pass a final test etc.)! So, we always recommend that you plan, if possible, to purchase Refundable or Exchangeable plane tickets.

After you have received the form letter, join the group for your recruits PIR. There you can ask questions about PIR, training, hotels etc. Those groups will be posted in the Boot Camp for Mom's group.

Thanks for joining us. We hope you will realize you are not alone, and will soon make new friends, plus feel supported and encouraged! :)

**It is very important that your future Sailor be physically fit prior to shipping to the RTC (these are new standards beginning 1/1/2018) and that he be able to pass an initial run test. See Navy Sets New Physical Fitness Standard to Start Boot Camp. "The initial run standard is evaluated on the 1.5 mile run of the first Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) at boot camp. The initial run standard for male recruits will be 16 minutes 10 seconds and 18 minutes seven seconds for female recruits."

Hi Guys...my daughter leaves for Boot Camp 8/2!! Ready or not!! wow...the time has flown by so fast! And every day so far has been an adventure. I spent the whole weekend with her this past weekend, ,and am very excited for her, but my anxiety level is certainly rising!!

Thanks for listening to my rant! :)

Fleur - I hope she gets better soon. :(

Becky - She is not better. She used her ear drops, but did not rest much over the weekend. She took the day off today & is going back to the doctor. We need to schedule her utilities to be turned over & take some stuff to her recruiter. If she feels better this afternoon, I'm going to try to get her to do some of it.

Hi Ladies! We had Kris's party on Saturday. It was very fun and so nice that so many showed up to celebrate and support him. I was ok all day but that night I fell apart and had a good cry... then yesterday... same thing only longer cries. I'm tearing up now just writing this.

He leaves August 18. I know he's ready but I'm sure NOT! It's always difficult for the ones left behind and sappy moms like me have a really hard time. I'm just going to miss him so much. Our home will be so quiet and, oh... you all know what I mean. LOL with tears in my eyes! ;)

To the mom who mentioned her child needing wisdom teeth removed: I had mine removed in boot camp( back in 1990 - the old days!) and I was on bed rest for the rest of the day and maybe light duty for another day or so but that was it. I wasn't set back at all and PIR'd with my company. My son still has his wisdom teeth but they aren't bothering him yet. I'm wondering if they'll remove them. Guess we'll see.

Hugs ladies!

TiffanysMom - She might have time to open one and get a card, my son's girlfriend just did this at Chase (formerly Washington Mutual) and got a card in 8 days. But she can also join the Navy Federal Credit Union that first week in boot camp (during P-days), because she HAS to have some type of bank acct because all their paychecks are direct deposit. My son decided to have accts at both places. He uses the NFCU as a savings acct and Chase as a checking acct (for his one and only credit card bill, which is paid off now). Oh, and if you ever have a question you want answered and no one responds promptly, "friend" me and then send me a message in via the "inbox" - I always go there first when I sign on. I'm on a ton of groups, so it's hard to check all of them all the time. Nice to meet you!

Sobe.... you are a godsend!! Can I ask another question??? She has never had a job, she's fresh out of school, so we do not have a bank account for her, is this bad?? She has no debts or anything in her name, I figured she could get a bank account with the navy's bank... should we go and get a different account?? She leaves in 14 days, not much time to get a debit card (MY LIFE Revolves around my debit card LOL) now I'm scared..

Tiffany's Mom - I just used the normal legal sized envelopes, you know, like the ones all of our bills come in!! During the first 4 weeks, we try to remind people not to send colored ones, or scented ones (from wives, gf's, bf's, etc) or those musical cards. It's not that they can't have them, it's just that they stand out - which means the RDC's can ask them to open them right then, so it's embarrassing for them. Why do they ask them to open them? Because they cannot receive anything but "G" rated cards and photos - and people who send those other type of items use those kinds of envelopes. It's also a power trip for those RDC's to shake the guys/gals up over unusual envelopes (stupid, I know). Your recruit will want pictures of you and your family, and it's okay to send those, but print them out on regular paper, it's less bulky in the envelope. Best of luck to your new recruit, your daughter will have an advantage at first = she's quiet and won't talk back. But later on, she'll want to learn to use her voice to shout orders, as all recruits are given jobs and they instruct others in a loud, firm voice.

Becky, yes she leaves Aug 9th, aug 8 is at the hotel, and Aug 9th is swearing in, then the airport. Hopefully all of our kids will get in the same group, I keep telling Tiffany "names" of your kids LOL She is a very shy, quiet girl, so I'm not sure if she will even attempt to talk first :) She will probably come out of bc swearing and giving orders LOL

Sobe, I know I've asked, I'm just old and short term memory problems, what type of envelope is recommended to send the letters in??

Fleur, I hope your daughter is feeling better :( she is there with you now, right??

Quick Reminders:
Yes, our recruits can take cell phones to bootcamp, but they are shipped back in the "kid box" the night they arrive - but it was so good to be able to talk and text my son until he had to put it in the box. That phone will come back in two pieces because it is always safer to remove the battery from any electronic device before mailing it - so look for them in strange places, like their shoes or a pocket. Don't just throw their clothes into the hamper or washing machine!!

Send your recruit with at least two phone cards and some stamps. Writing paper and envelopes are provided to them. Also, YES, they can bring and keep their wallets at boot camp, just don't send a lot of cash ($25 or less). YES they can bring and keep a debit & credit card. Yes, they can have photos in their wallet (and they will look at them all the time, so add some new ones for them!). Put a small piece of paper in their wallets with all your contact numbers. Most kids don't know our work number or cell number by heart - because they are programed into their cell phones, so if they have these numbers handy in their wallets, they won't go blank when they finally are able to call you! Surprise you recruit by slipping a note into their wallet before they leave - so many have written to their moms saying that little note keep them alive while they waited for their real mail to arrive.

They receive mail 6 days a week at bc, but they won't get any for at least 2 weeks - please prepare them now for this! Once mail service begins for them, then it takes about 7-8 days to receive a letter from home, but we get their letters in about 3-4 days. So date your letters, and put the date you mailed it on the back of the envelope. That way, when the mail does catch up with them and they have 15 pieces of it in front of them, they will know which letter to read first!

Thanks for the information Sobe.

My daughter flys out on August 9. She will go with the recruiter on the 8th, we will go over to see her sworn in & maybe hang out at the airport. It's only 1 hour from home. My husband needs to work at least a 1/2 day, the next day will have to go back to the same place for a doctor's apt. I tried to change the apt to the afternoon of the 9th, but they don't have office visits on Monday.
