Hello everyone and welcome to the Navy!!! This Group was started for the loved one of DEPpers leaving in the month of August (although everyone is welcome).......What year you say? Well ......any year!
We are an extension of the group DEPpers/Future Sailors....in, but not gone yet- see the link above.
If you haven't been there, go there now....There is a ton of information that you will need and are probably dying for....like what to send with them to Boot Camp and BC videos! :)
So if you have general information and comments that will be helpful and/or encouraging for ALL new DEP/Future Sailor Moms, then leave it in that main DEPper/Future Sailors Group, but if you have August ship out issues/questions etc., need specific information, (or have some to share) or just want to talk to someone that is where you are, with a Recruit leaving for and arriving in BC in August, ...then this is the place to be. :-)
Remember, don't "miss 'em while you're with them!" :) Make the most of every precious moment together before they leave. This will be a big transition for both of you! We'll be here for you every step of the way...
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Things to do in the last month before your future sailor leaves (Click on the link.)
Once your recruit has arrived at RTC, the next stop here is to join the group Boot Camp for Moms (and loved ones) Hangout and ask questions in this group until your form letter arrives.
Approx two to three weeks after your recruit arrives you will receive the "Form Letter". The form letter will include their Ship# , DIV #, their mailing address, PIR date, and the Security Access Form. The Security Access form needs to be completed and sent back to your recruit ASAP. Keep this letter in a safe place, it has the information you will need.
The date that is on the form letter is the official date for your Recruit's Training Groups PIR (graduation), Things can always change for an individual Recruit (due to illness, injury, failure to pass a final test etc.)! So, we always recommend that you plan, if possible, to purchase Refundable or Exchangeable plane tickets.
After you have received the form letter, join the group for your recruits PIR. There you can ask questions about PIR, training, hotels etc. Those groups will be posted in the Boot Camp for Mom's group.
Thanks for joining us. We hope you will realize you are not alone, and will soon make new friends, plus feel supported and encouraged! :)
**It is very important that your future Sailor be physically fit prior to shipping to the RTC (these are new standards beginning 1/1/2018) and that he be able to pass an initial run test. See Navy Sets New Physical Fitness Standard to Start Boot Camp. "The initial run standard is evaluated on the 1.5 mile run of the first Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) at boot camp. The initial run standard for male recruits will be 16 minutes 10 seconds and 18 minutes seven seconds for female recruits."

mordyl, a lot of future Sailors start second guessing their choice in the last weeks before shipping and in the first few weeks after arrival at the RTC. As you say, it has a lot to do with the unknown. Just encourage him to keep going and to do his best. My now Sailor spent a LOT of time on the phone with his recruiter and another Sailor that he respected about week before he shipped. He had gotten hurt several weeks before he shipped and all kinds of things were going through his head about not being able to ship and if he had healed enough and if he should have done something else and....and..... He did fine in BC and most do, so yours can too if he believes that he can and really wants it.
Hi lemonelephant, Is there a rating information card for sonar technician, and/or a link to a group? Thanks for all you do!
proudmama, my Sailor has an account with NFCU and feels it was the best option for him. Others have also recommended it and I do based on that as well. See more on that in 1. f. of Things to Do in the Last Month Before Your Future Sailor Leaves for the RTC,
proudmama, He will be sworn in at MEPS before going to the RTC. Yes, he was sworn in before, but that one sealed his intent to be in the Navy and he can actually back out; the one before heading to the RTC actually enlists him in the Navy and his date of service and pay start from that day. There are some links in the discussion, Things to Do in the Last Month Before Your Future Sailor Leaves for the RTC, that discuss more about MEPS and what happens.
The Rating Infromation Card is put out by the navy and gives more information about the rating (job/specialty) that the future Sailor has contracted for. What is your future Sailor's rating (job/specialty) going to be? I can give you the link for the Rating Information Card and there are groups for most ratings and/or "A" Schools and knowing that will help you to better plan for PIR weekend when the time comes.
ps He is not disciplined enough to handle college.
Ok ladies. My son is leaving Aug 26 and is having second thoughts. I am encouraging him as this is a great opportunity for school but I think he is just afraid of the unknown.
Looking for some wisdom to encourage him to the right decision.
OK... I need your help (or thoughts, opinions, suggestions) I am trying to decide between the Navy Lodge and Courtyard Marriott for PIR. It won't be until Oct. but I want to have it decided so when I do get the info for PIR I can just get on the phone and call to make reservations. I want to be close and these two seem to be my best options. ??? Any suggestions?
Lemonelephant... one last question for you...everyone keeps asking about the rating information card. What is that? Getting more confused as time gets closer to bc. Yikes!
Lemonelephant- I have a couple of questions for you... I noticed that the recruiter and most everyone else is recommending an Navy federal act for my son., but my daughter and SIL use USAA. What do you recommend when setting up the bank account? Does it really matter?
Also, my son was originally supposed to go to MEPs in DesPlaines, IL when he was contracted with the Navy, but since it was full (right before Christmas), he was sent to Milwaukee, WI. He was contracted and was sworn in at that time. He told me that when he reports on the 7th, he will be sent back to MEPs in Milwaukee, get some processing done, spend the night and will then be sent to GL on the 8th. He said that he does not get sworn in again... Does that sound correct to you? Just wanted to know what your thoughts are....
thanks for your help to all of us!
NausetMom, you are very welcome.
