Hello everyone and welcome to the Navy!!! This Group was started for the loved one of DEPPERS leaving in the month of October (although everyone is welcome).......What year you say? Well ......any year!

If you have October ship out issues/questions etc., need specific information, (or have some to share) or just want to talk to someone that is where you are, with a Recruit leaving for and arriving in BC in October, ...then this is the place to be. :-)

Remember, don't "miss 'em while you're with them!" :) Make the most of every precious moment together before they leave. This will be a big transition for both of you! We'll be here for you every step of the way...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once your recruit has arrived at RTC, the next stop here is to join the group Boot Camp for Moms (and loved ones)  Hangout and ask questions in this group until your form letter arrives.

***New news just out today (9/25/19) from the US Navy Recruit Training Command FaceBook page:
Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

Approx two to three weeks after your recruit arrives you will receive the "Form Letter". The form letter will include their Ship# , DIV #, their mailing address, PIR date, and the Security Access Form. The Security Access form needs to be completed and sent back to your recruit ASAP. Keep this letter in a safe place, it has the information you will need.

The date that is on the form letter is the official date for your Recruit's Training Groups PIR (graduation), Things can always change for an individual Recruit (due to illness, injury, failure to pass a final test etc.)! So, we always recommend that you plan, if possible, to purchase Refundable or Exchangeable plane tickets.

After you have received the form letter, join the group for your recruits PIR. There you can ask questions about PIR, training, hotels etc. Those groups will be posted in the Boot Camp for Mom's group.

Thanks for joining us. We hope you will realize you are not alone, and will soon make new friends, plus feel supported and encouraged! :)

**It is very important that your future Sailor be physically fit prior to shipping to the RTC (these are new standards beginning 1/1/2018) and that he be able to pass an initial run test. See Navy Fitness Standards"The initial run standard is evaluated on the 1.5 mile run of the first Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) at boot camp. The initial run standard for male recruits will be 16 minutes 10 seconds and 18 minutes 37 seconds for female recruits."

WooHoo!! Just got the "I arrived" call from my son. The call lasted 15 seconds...definitely scripted. It sounded like he was reading from a card. I asked him it was like his recruiter said it would be. He said he didn't know yet.

My daughter left yesterday for Great Lakes. I did okay until I watched her swear in to active duty. Rough day - waiting for the phone to ring. She did call when she got to O'Hare, to the USO, and then "the call" from bootcamp. I didn't know we could go to MEPS until we checked her into the hotel the night before. If you have a child leaving, be sure to check on this. I'm so glad we got to experience those last moments.

Well tomorrow we take my son to my son to his recruiter for one final DEP meeting and then on to the MEPS hotel for ship out on 10/7. He was really hoping to get to the hotel and get to bed really early, but they aren't taking him out to MEPS until after the DEP meeting. So he'll be lucky to be in bed by 9 pm. So much for plans. I told him to get used to the lack of sleep. He's never been on a plane before so he's not sure he'll be able to sleep at all. I'm praying that he does. So the plan for the rest of the day is to pack the wallet and try not to cry. I'm saving most of my tears for after I say goodbye. That way...I can fall apart and my son won't have to feel like he's responsible for those tears.

JessicaB, Thanks for all of helpful information. I joined several groups (Illinois, Nuke moms, etc) last Jan to help prepare both myself and my son for this journey.

Hey girls! I just got back from MEPS where I said goodbye to my husband. ugh talk about an emotional roller coaster! The worst part was watching ben say good bye to our 11 month old soon =[I just would like to share my experience with all of you moms and other wives/girlfriends. I had to take ben up to the hotel last night. His recruiter told me that I should get a room there as well and after his curfew he could just "sneak out". When we got to the hotel he had to go check in without me. I decided to go ahead and get a room since the front desk said it could take awhile! And boy it did. 2 1/2 hours! Well my husband just asked if he could stay with me instead, and they said it was fine! Some other guys were able to stay with their girls as well. Ben had to be at breakfast in the lobby at 5 and then he took a shuttle over to MEPs. Visitors were allowed to arrive at 9. Most of the time I was there, I was just sitting around waiting for ben to be done talking to everyone, but we did get some down time as well. Around 11:30 he was sworn in. Oh gosh girls, I've never been so proud in my entire life. I could have went to meet him at the airport, but we decided to say good bye after he was sworn in. It was tough but at the same time exciting! Bring tissues with you if you decided to go with your boys. Its hard but you will feel so proud of them. Good luck to all of you as you send your boys off this month! We can get through this!

Hi all, we took my son to his recruiting office this am to go to MEPS in St Louis, then on to Great Lakes tomorrow. Recruiter told him that he'll check into the hotel this afternoon & be free to go out & about provided he doesn't do anything to get into trouble. Recruiter also told him NO alcohol tonight, not even 1 beer (he's 23). They'll test him in the am at MEPS & even a 0.01 will get him kicked out of the Navy.

Hi Arwen, that is so funny and something to think about. I am so glad my son went ahead and shaved his hair off. It was long. He donates it (twice) to locks of love but he knew it wouldn't be long enough before he left.
Sunny, your daughter's new hair cut is so cute. It may take her a while to get used to but she will love how it feels, I hope.
Good luck and best wishes to all the deppers leaving this week. To all moms I will be thinking of you and praying for a good Boot Camp journey.
Lori, yikes, three weeks away for Adam and Brandon. "HUGS" to everyone. Kathy

Oh Arwen that's too funny!!!

When I joined the Navy (late 80s) it was common for the guys to get wild and crazy hairstyles right before going to boot camp, the kind of thing they knew wouldn't go over well at work or school (rainbow mohawks, spikes, etc) and arrive looking like a Technicolor mosh pit. One pass with the Navy's clippers and the rainbow locks were but a memory.

It doesn't always work out so well, though. One of the guys from my husband's division had a waist-length dreadlocked ponytail. It wouldn't have been a problem, except that particular week the barbers were on vacation. Oops. So he got a lot of strange looks for the next week as he marched around boot camp in uniform with dreds.

marieesco - Aaawwwww, you are such a sweetheart! Meaghan still isn't quite convinced that it's cute but she's getting there LOL! Thanks for the support and good luck to you when you leave later in the month!!

MI_Lori (Adams Mom) - Thanks! I love it too, but have to agree with marieesco that I kind of gasped when they cut off the first braid as well. It's so much easier for guys because they so don't care (usually) about losing their hair (till they hit their 40's LOL). Good luck to Adam when he leaves later in the month!!
