Elaine, I'm sorry to hear Mike has COPD. He's too young for that. Is the treatment he's getting helping him? My dad had it years ago and medicines have come a long way since then. I look forward to continuing to get to know one another. I have great memories of the May HC! Photos on the beach! On the HC day weren't you wearing so "feelers" on your head or am I thinking of someone else that day?

Anna- the last time we went to a Ren Fest [ around 11 years ago!] it was horrible. It was held on a dirt open field and was hot and dusty with people begging and not much activities as I remember. Now they hold it on built up property that's there year round [ though not open]. It's beautifully done with trees offering shade and many stages for different acts. Lots of food buildings and gift type shops. I was very impressed! I love people watching and those who are really into it are amusing to watch. Some ladies could have done with a LOT less "exposure" though! But for the most part I love the creativity of the costumes. I'll bet your friend has lots of business!

Elaine ~ good to hear about all your news of moving here and Navy connections...I look forward to getting to know you. I'm very new to MD and do like this group :-)  I get keys to our house on OCT 5 - so we are moving right around the same time...

Lori - I have been to the Ren Fest in Texas - most do come dressed up, there, too. I have a friend that sews those kinds of costumes and some of the folks she sews for take it to the "hilt!"

Lori-We are renting the house we live in. We will not have a house when we get to Maryland because mom will need me, or someone, there 24/7. Mini storage up there is twice what I am paying down here. Also, the U-Haul is $824.00 for 5 days and what I sold my applicances for will just about pay for that. We will be storing most of my stuff in my mom's garage for the time being. We are bringing the living room furniture. My brother has a finished basement and it will be put down there. Husband sleeps in a recliner because of COPD.

BTW-I can't wait to spend more time with you. We had so little time at homecoming in May. Maybe sometime in November we can plan to see each other. My sister in Pasadena has been the main care-taker for my mom, she brings her supper almost every night. I will have time off to do what I want about every couple of weeks or so. Maybe in a smaller state, LOL, seeing other moms like me won't be so hard. Here in Texas we are spread out and with other half's work schedule, I haven't been able to go to the meetings here. I miss that a lot.

Glad you had a good time today, I saw where there was some rain. Have a great rest of the weekend.

We just got back from the Renaissance Festival near Annapolis. What a great place and it was a lot of fun! So many people came dressed up that I'm wondering if they are regulars [ or just have fun putting on costumes!]. Has anyone gone there before?

Elaine- I mentioned to my husband that you were moving here and he said he had a good time getting to know Mike at the pub when we were at the Homecoming luncheon. I don't envy you having to move. Did you sell your house in TX? Why do you have to sell all your appliances, they don't convey with the house?

Deneen- wonderful news for you! They will be so much closer. When do they move?

Thanks, Betsy. All my family is in Maryland. I have 3 sisters, one is estranged from the family but lives in Baltimore, and one brother. Brother and one sister live in Pasadena and one lives on the Eastern Shore. I grew up in Glen Burnie, married a sailor and we have lived in Japan (3 years) back to D.C. (lived at Andrews AFB) for 3 years, and then to San Diego for a little over 2 years.

I have 2 sons. The oldest is my cross to bear but hopefully things will turn around for him some day. My sailor is my youngest. He was born in San Diego and is now stationed there, LOL. I have 2 small dogs, one a Chihuahua mix and the other a full Chihuahua, and 2 cats. They and my other half will be staying at my brother's house because my mom has a cat that is declawed and has only seen other animals out the windows or at the vets.

I have spent the last 4  weeks purging 3 mini storage units and a garage and packing as I go. I have done a mountain of laundry and every trash day there are at least 3 big bags of trash, if not more, on the curb. Every Friday, recycle day, the bin on wheels is out there filled to the brim, too. Worked in the kitchen this morning. I have sold all my appliances except my ceramic top stove. Still a bit to do but am hoping to be out of here by the 3rd of October.

I know a sailor-husband on the Stennis so I keep up with that ship, too. He PIR'd with my sailor but was in a different division. I guess that is all for now. Thanks for the welcome, I can't wait to meet all the Maryland Mom's soon.

Hi Elaine, Welcome!  Lori is a sweetheart, so any friend of her's has got to be awesome!  :)   So sorry to hear about your mom's health issues.  :(  But, your story does sound very familiar and a bit like my story.  We are originally from Maryland, but did live in WV for 6 years, then most recently lived in New Mexico for almost 7 years.  We just moved back here last spring so I could help out and be closer to my elderly parents, our oldest daughter and our grandchildren.  Unfortunately, that move put us farther away from 4 of our other adult children who are still out west.  We have 2 children living in NM, one in CO and our youngest who is our sailor, is based out of Bremerton, WA on the Stennis which is currently deployed.

My brother lives in Brooklyn Park, so he is not too far from your parents.

I can't wait to get to know you too.  We do have get togethers and we are about due for another lunch.  Maybe you will be here then.

Okay, all. I guess I will just jump right in here. I am a Texas mom right now but due to the health of my mom I am moving back to Maryland. Other half (also known as husband) and I should be arriving around the end of the first week of October. My mom lives in the same house I grew up in so I truly am moving back home. I know Lori from the Vinson moms group. She also happens to be one of my favorite Vinson moms, LOL.

My mom lives in Glen Burnie, but I know Maryland like the back of my hand. Of course, I-97 still has me confused but put me on 695 or 83 and I can find my way around. Also, it doesn't hurt to have a GPS handy. I am looking forward to getting to know all you wonderful moms supporting your sailors. BTW, my sailor is also on the Vinson. He just took his first major test in the Navy. Now the waiting begins to see if he advances. This group seems very active and I hope to meet more of you as I get settled back in Maryland. Have a wonderful weekend.

I think we should all be looking at early Oct.  for lunch.  Any dates ladies?

Comment by Betsy, mom of Stennis sailor on September 21, 2012 at 5:59pm

Lori, I have a question for you.  Since Paul is on the Vinson, which is based out of SD, right?  I asked Adam if he was going to get the Golden Shell back and he said he could only get that if he was based out of the east coast and he would only get Shell back this trip.  He has already crossed the International Date Line, so wouldn't he also cross the Equator, as Paul did, to get to the Middle East?  I'm a little confused now!

Betsy- good looking strike group!

Anna- the day you get your keys is the same day my daughter and SIL get theirs! However they are in Wilmington NC : (

I live in Olney [ don't expect you to know that!]- kind of close [ half an hour] between Columbia [ one side of us] and Germantown [ the other side of us]. I am directional challenged [ to say the least] so I don't know where you are in relation to that. Joanne met me in Germantown as it was half an hour from her [ is that right Joanne, I've forgotten?].
