OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

I agree it is very fustrating on mailing packages. If I mail a package from our main po it will take 3 weeks or longer for my son to recieve his package in Afghanistan. But if I mail the box from my local po near my home he has the box in 9 days. Now go figure.
I just make sure I keep a supple of customs forms and plenty of mailing labels on hand, so I can have it all ready before I head to the po, go I would not want to withstand the rath of the po worker if you don't have your stuff all filled out.

FoxSox reminder...Fox Sox Military Catalog My son still swears by these socks, altho he says if you're going to get wet, they hold too much water, but for day to day wear, they are the best. You can sometimes google and find them cheaper.
Send lotions and creams, lots of ziplock baggies, all sizes. Maybe some powdered Tide or something, because when Matt's box came home those clothes did not smell laundered, and he swore he did not send home dirty laundry. The dog, however, felt differently. Maybe it's the water? cheap detergent? who knows?
He also wanted salsa, "not Pace, mom", which I found in plastic jugs at costco, just wrapped it as it was packaged in bubble wrap, ziplock bagged it, more bubble wrap. Sometimes they cook for themselves...ask! elec skillet that can be left for the next crew...rice cooker, george foreman grill...and spices.
Matt called about a half dozen times total, and with my battle with ATT and Time Warner about transferring my number I missed a couple...you did not want to be the service reps for those companies around that time. Cell service was spotty, I needed that land line!

my son calls pretty regularly but he has no girlfriend so... he calls me.. I love the calls but I hear only every other word with lots of echoing so its really hard and frustrating.. he hates emails even though when the phone is bad I'd almost prefer it.. he also will use AIM and send txt to my phone so I can txt him right back... The packages of things havent started coming here yet but he said to expect them... hopefully they will come with no spiders....

Well, this is sort of comforting knowing I'm not the only one who's son forgets about calling/writing home. He's a talker not a writer so I don't think I will ever get an email. Funny thing he'll call the GF every day cuz she told him to. Hmm, so did mom and dad (not daily of course) After reading these posts I wonder what "stuff" he'll be sending home.

Does anyone know if there is an additional cost to sending a letter to an APO/AE? I though it would follow regular us rates .42 but the postoffice said it's a $1.69 when my mom called. Just doesn't soud right to me

Bless myspace...it's a sanity saver...and I put pictures like crazy up on my personal myspace...and a tracker...loved to see that foreign IP that viewed my myspace! He liked the pictures of the yard, the neighborhood, the dogs....home.

Better news today. My son has fianlly found some Navy personel to help him.
He actullay took my advise yahoo to that. If anyone who's 'an IA with a diffrenet branch and needs assistance they are CTF-IA. Put on bases to handle any issues that arise for our Sailors. I am furious at what they were doing to him. Now hopefully things will get better. His GF told me today he sounded much happier. He even got to take a shower.
