When I used to hear from the parent coordinator when my son was deployed, one question that was always asked is "have you heard from your child lately?" and then "let us know if you have not heard from your child lately..." and usually I heard within a few days of that, altho I never answered the questions..evidently someone did and the cattle prod must have come out over in Iraq.

I'm so glad, maria! when I see your name in my email notifications from this board, my heart jumps...I'm just trained to worry, I guess! I'm glad you heard and I'm glad you spoke up...those guys need to be aware that we just need a "hi, i love you mom, love soandso!" from them on a regular basis...

All....I too am on the waiting end of communications. Its harding waiting for information out of Afghanistan than it was when he was in Iraq. It helps having other Navy Moms to talk to!

My pilot is currently assigned to the Army, with EOD.

As our son explained that even tho Iraq was governed by a dictator, it had a central government with power, water, communications and sewer in all the Cities. Unlike Afhanistan that has never had a central govermant and no info-structure. He said they might as well be in the 1600 century.

I too have those days when I think I can't bear it any more, playing the waiting game. I find when I get that way, it must be time to put together another care package. I give them themes: toys, foods of different countries or reading material of a specific topic. It seems to help. I know if he can't use what I send that he will pass it on to someone that can.

Jody

MMKaren...I got on my son just one time when he was deployed, just said how nervewracking it was when I didn't hear anything..and he goes back into high school mode just briefly.."I emailed just the other day....didn't I? oh...maybe I didn't...oh...sorry mom"...crap! It had been two weeks! so he did somewhat better...then when he comes home at Christmas I hear how they talked about how badly they treated their moms when they were in highschool and how they are going to do better, yada yada...I said just stay in touch when you are in the sand.

maria, always come tell us when you're having a rough time, that's what this group is for and here is where you find others who are just like you. Loving their children in harm's way, and those of us who have done it and been blessed with the return of our child safely to the US find that tears come just as easily when we help you worry about yours as well...you are not crying and praying alone, maria. Is your son on a 7 month tour?

My son will be leaving in a few weeks for Afghanistan. Just what can I expect? I don't listen to the news either. Is it really as bad as I'm thinking? I just hope he knows what he's gotten himself into. It's going to be one sleepless year ahead for those of us at home.
