Check out the discussion in this group about sailors in Afghanistan. We've posted lots of ideas of what to send our sailors. Because my sailor is at a big camp, he's got it better than a lot. His favorite is banana cream pie, so I sent pudding mix and a graham cracker crust. He can get milk and the occasonal banana. Things in cans are good if they're out in the field because they can heat soup, etc., on a vehicle's engine. Take a look at recipes in camping books--you'll get ideas.

My son calls from Afgh. all the time. Sometimes he uses the DSN line so the call is a "local" call through the Arsenal. Sometimes it goes through Andrews AFB. Sometimes he calls on his yahoo account. He has a satellite phone I believe. He recommends not sending phone cards from here.

PS - I have not "heard" from Derek in a couple of weeks. He does get to email daily though!!
Sometimes his computer acts crazy and he sends it three times. I used to get excited, thinking he was finally talking. Now I know - just the same one sentence - three times!!

Hey Ladies!! A group is wanting to send phone cards to Sailors deployed in the war zone. Can anyone give me some information about calling home? My son is in Kuwait and when he is on land he can call home for free. What about the Sailors in Iraq and Afghanistan? Can most of them call home for free? What about Sailors on ships over there?
Comment by Brenda Sue on July 10, 2008 at 10:35am
Hi, I don't have a son in Iraq, but I had to join this group to leave this message. Then, I am going to get back out.

My sister makes what she calls do-rags. We have sent some to Iraq because the soldiers say that they wear them under them helmet and it keeps the helmet from rubbing and the sweat from their eyes. If you are interested in sending some to your sailor, just let me know and we will get them to you or straight to him/her.

I know you are proud of your sailor and please know that I am keeping them all in my prayers!!
