KPC,
The ball is in Las Vegas. I guess I should not have believed the person giving me the requirements for check in. Thanks for the information.
Pam,
I am glad the mystery of the POA is solved for you. Sometimes less is more. Our son also discussed his wishes before he left. He wanted us to be prepared, just in case. Yet, no parent really wants to think that way.
TennMom,
I have decided I am just better off without the FRO. Our son can tell me what I need to know. If he can't tell, then I won't miss it.
Now, I am going to change 'gears' as my hubby tells me I do often. Have any or you gone to the Marine Ball? I understand that they have one for sailor/soldiers when they get back from deployment.
Anyway, I have been making hotel reservations for my son to attend. I just found out he is too young to check in the hotel where they are holding this event, but he is not to young to go half way across the world to a war zone and defend our country. This just does not make any sense to me. Frazzled Curleytop
Well, my son never ended up doing that POA. Haha, he just forgot to tell Mom. It's ok I understand that he has a lot on his mind right now. Mystery solved. Hope everyone's Sailors are doing well.
Thank you TN Navy Mom. I'll just email my son and see what he says. I actually didn't even know about FRO's until I looked back at the emarines site. My son is so independent and in control of his own life that I guess he forgot to tell me about that tidbit of information. LOL. Ugh.. so much to learn on the green side.
Thanks TDM. Having worked for attorneys for nearly 20 years and going through some crazy legal loops when my parents passed away, a POA does come in handy at times. But you're right, in this situation his dad and I are his beneficiaries if anything happens to him. But in this case he actually did do one and never sent me a copy. I'll just shoot him an email about it. His communications are intermittent and sporadic but we do hear from him thank goodness.
I think one of the toughest talks we had before he even went into the Navy was how he wanted us to handle things if something happened to him. Most parents I know look at us like we're nuts when we say we know his wishes. I guess it's a taboo subject, but when you have a son/daughter in the military, at least in my case, I had to know. It's amazing how your thought process can go all over the place when their in the military.
Pam, my son just flat refused to do a POA. He said that we were his next of kin and why would he need to do so? I had access to all his bank accounts, etc. already so he just said no. One thing I discovered was that POA can vary from state to state, I had no idea.
I have a question. Before my son deployed he made me his appointed power of attorney and I asked him to send me a copy (I work for attorneys). I never got the copy so I'm sure he probably forgot to do it. Can the FRO send that to me? Tomorrow marks our half way point with this deployment. Yippee!
Thanks ladies for your comments.
Past history has taught me to be more reserved. I used to get excited about things and then came the military. I know that they are doing their best. Changes are inevitable but I am much more cautious now. If I do not allow myself to plan or count on something happen and then it does, I am a much happier person.
Tennmom, you have the gift of putting into words what I cannot. Thank you.
TDM, Yes, the FRO has my contact information. I inquired how to help my son about some business. She never seems to directly answer my questions. Her answer back to me was, if I liked, she would contact my son's 1stSgt. to have him help in the matter. I thought the FRO were to help us state side. The long and short of it, my last email to her was that I will not bother her again with anything. Some help. I know the FRO's have helped many of you and my situation is different. My son told me before I signed up for eMarine, she was trouble. How right he was.
I am surviving this because yesterday when I thought I would exploded of anger toward her, I know someone that used to be a yeoman in the Navy. She is helping me. All of you are helping me. Just typing the words out is a release and helps me to let go. I was so upset yesterday thinking I had gotten my son into trouble I could barely breathe, but today is a new day.
I want to keep going so at some future date, I can see him. New motto-Boots Down USA. Even though it is weeks away.
Great words of wisdom TN Navy Mom. I'm taking all of this to heart. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
