cecilia d....yes Ive been writing him, telling him all the funny little things that have been going on here. Hopefully the notes will brighten his day when he finally gets them. I hope my son writes me as often as yours did (but he doesnt like to write letters so probably not :)

Here is part of the nuclear field statement of understanding that they have to sign on the day they enlist into the Navy, that talks about failing A school:

• Automatic Advancement- Personnel in the Nuclear Field program will be enlisted in paygrade E-3. Advancement to paygrade E-4 is authorized only after personnel complete all advancement-in-rate requirements (to include minimum time in rate) and Class "A" School, provided eligibility in the Nuclear Field program is maintained. If Nuclear Field Class "A" School training is not completed, the member will be administratively reduced to E-2 or E-1, depending on the member's time in rate at the date of disenrollment.

Watched tonight on our news that they christened the USS MINNESOTA  nuclear submarine.  In New Port News VA.  My mind has been focused more on what the carriers are named.

southcarolinamom- start writing letters to him, you can mail them once you get the address from your son. my son wrote me almost everyday and sent the letters on sunday in one envelope.  so i got diary every thursday.  and i cried every time reading them.  I sure got practice writing english a little better for my native language is chinese.

Thanks Cecilia d...you moms have put my heart at ease about that :). Hoping to get the form letter soon so I can atleast know his address and PIR day. Maybe I will feel better then :)

southcarolinamom-my son has been in a-school for 8weeks now. the rdc in bootcamp don't specially pick on nukes, they don't remember everybody's job is.  that what my son told me.  he even got appointed to be recruit chief petty officer, but he chose to be recruit leading petty officer instead, so don't worry too much.  no news is good news is exactly what i told everybody when they asked me how my son was doing in boot camp.

Mary, From what I've read on here in the past, I think they only keep rank if they pass A school.

If they fail out of A school they get dropped from the nuclear power program. They are reduced in rank to E1 and have to pay back all the extra pay they earned as an E3 back to the start of bootcamp. At that point they are either offered a different job rating in the conventional Navy (which means another A school), or they could be sent to the fleet as undesignated (no rating), or they can even be separated from the Navy depending on the circumstances. They could wind up as a Navy cook or something.

Good luck to your daughter she could be just going through a rough patch and will be able to finish A school with some extra help from the instructors.

bethr311...Ive looked into it, Im sure they will get a Portion of the "sandy" part of the storm, but the part where it merges and becomes "frankenstorm" is further West and North. I CAN tell you that I have been to Charleston many times and they have an EXCELLENT exit stragedy incase of hurricanes and storms. Also the Navy will take care of our children, We just have to believe that. I'll keep watching the local news for ya. I will let you know if I hear anything else.
