Hi NancyJo and Rachael. I wish I had this site when my son was at BC and Ballston Spa. It's really great the way everyone here supports each other. I am from that part of the world, so my son was already familiar with the area and it made for a pretty smooth transition. But the reallity was, he was working 24/7 and now that he is in GC and again, not far from home, it is much better! I know you and your son will be fine!

Rachael, I have so been enjoying your posts.  My son is in Proto in Ballston Spa and has gone through what your sailor is going through now and I can remember it all so well.  It does seem like it went fast now that I'm looking back but at the time it seemed like a lot of waiting and worrying.  Hang in there, you are doing fine  :^)

Update: Yup, i'm still alive! Even though I no longer sleep, running on coffee and afraid to look at the mirror now and then, It is all worth it =) Nick is now a month old and growing up waaaaay too fast for my liking. We are staying in SC (yaaaay!) and going to have a pretty decent grad hold of 4 months before he starts prototype. He takes comp on Monday and next Friday can not come soon enough. Well, gotta run. Little man is screaming for his mama.

Thanks for all of the encouragement!  I was actually worried about the oposite happening since he isn't one to study at all and spent all of his time at the gym or gaming before.  I'm sure they will fix that problem very quickly!  He was already a "man" compared to the "boy" who left for bootcamp and I'm super proud of the man he has turned into.

Rachel, so glad that everything finally worked out, in spite of the problems with weather and airports.  My son is also an MM and on grad hold in GC.  He loves being an MM and I am sure your son will as well.  Best of luck but be prepared for a roller coaster ride...lol  Not unlike bootcamp.  But at least now you will be able to hear his voice and send texts, Skype, email, etc.  WHEW!!!

Hi Rachel - Y'know...when I was watching the news last week and saw the storm that was headed Chicago-way, the first thing I thought of was PIR and how the storm was going to make that whole weekend tough! Glad y'all made it through in one piece! AND Glad your nuke got his luggage!  My son is also at GC as an MM (class 1209B)...taking a BIG test today. If I may be so bold as to make a suggestion, suggest to your son that it NOT be all about studying...yes, they study their little butts off, but he also needs to take time for himself--running, working out at the gym, whatever it is that he can do to take a break from the books. Not only is it way healthier for him, but it really does help his brain to re-boot and retain everything.  This is a helluva rollercoaster, and it's hard to have to step back and let them "do their thing"...but you will be amazed at how much he's grown (even moreso than you were at PIR).  Welcome to the family :)
