Hi Everyone, Just would like to do a little survey since I live in one of the areas with the highest gas prices in the states.  I am paying around 4.10 a gallon for regular and that's at the cheapo stations.  What are you paying???  I'm just north of San Francisco.

my3sons - my sailor bought a new car and did it by allotment through "my pay".  He has good credit and still pays 8% on a brand new nissan!  Got a good deal because his uncle has been with nissan for 20 years and got him a family discount PLUS he put $2-3000 down and still got 8%,

 

Navy Fed was going to be a little higher than that.  Wants to use bonus $ to pay it down more and refinance it.

Connie, your son sure earned a Bravo Zulu for that!  I'm glad he stuck to his guns and then excelled!!  My son is an EM and although has been putting in 20+ hours of homework each week, he says "it's fun".  I'm glad he thinks that!!  He had his first BE1 and did much better than he thought he would, with a 3.31

Hapsmolmr-It sounds like your son has his mind made up, so you know he will be just fine, because he wants to succeed.  Once BC is over it's so much better, you can talk to him every day through Orientation, then sadly they have so much homework the talks are less frequent.  But still better than BC!!

my3sons, just ordered the $20 coupon book for Charleston.  There seem to be quite a few coupons for things like Wendy's and pizza, but I figure that our son will be happy to use whatever we don't manage to use on our visit.  Oh, and with shipping, it's $24.95, if anyone wants to know.  Why it's $4.95 to ship a little coupon book is beyond me, but I figure we'll save enough money to make it worth it.  Thanks for the link!

So, my son has lost a few of his classmates in A school so far. He is an ET. I think he said they are down to 23 in his class 1115 and unfortunately there was another under age drinking incident over the weekend. I do not have any details. My son spoke to his dad about it. He wasn't involved, but a number of his buddies from his class were. It has him a bit rattled, because they have become good friends to him. I do believe if you have the drive and desire to make it through you will. We moved my son from Maine to California in the middle of his sophmore year in high school, so he did not go out much. It was a bit of a culture shock from one coast to the other! He had friends, but chose to stick his nose in his books. He has become much more social since he has been at Goose Creek which is good for him. So far he is doing well. Might be a little sick right now. . . but hopefully will feel better in a day or two. Miss him so much!

hapsmolmr, tell your son (altho if he's in boot camp, you won't be able to communicate much if at all) to not give up if nuke is his dream. My son was told in boot camp that he was dq'd for a medical reason. He was pressured repeatedly to sign for a new job -- offered only corpsman or cook, both a sure ticket to the Middle East -- but he refused again and again. He got to call home once, from the legal office, what a nightmare, we could only pray that he would stay strong (he's 18). Came down to the wire, final week of boot camp, and he got waivers and went to Goose Creek.... where he won the Commander's Award for Excellence in A school in October, was honorman in machines, and just missed being #1 overall in his class. So ... if your son wants it badly enough, it will happen.

Thanks for the words of encouragement.  My son says that since it will be his job he will be motivated to study and he has shown that in the job he had between high school and going to RT so I know he has it in him.  You just always hear these horror stories of " the recruiter said...... but it never happened" and the kid ends up scrubbing barnacles off a boat somewhere in Alaska so as a mom there is that concern that he hasn't been led to believe things that aren't true.

The 90% figure is high, for sure. The number varies somewhat year to year, but 75-80% is better. As others have mentioned, the ones that don't make it academically will have other opportunities, because they are still capable of more than the average sailors. If they're submarine volunteers, the MMs often become auxiliary MMs (A-gang) on the boat; EMs and ETs often cross-rate into electronics/computer fields in the non-nuc part of the boat. Roughly a third of all submarine A-gangers started out in the nuc program.

thanks for the insight.  I'm not worried too much about boot camp -- more the studying for tests part that is my concern.   Guess we will just have to see.
