BQB and Mary - yes, my daughter has $7000 saved, but she has had help.  I used to always make the kids save half of any money they got for gifts, but also my MIL opened  an investment account for my son when he was about 2, started with $1500 in it.  When my daughter was born she did the weirdest thing and said to give her half of his account.  My son was never happy about that.  anyway, it was a college account.  We just cashed it in last month since it's in my son's name and he is not going to college, so that we could take the money out and split it between them.  They each got $2350, so not bad at all from the initial $1500 investment 18 years ago.

He, being the horrible money manager that he is, has already blown over half of his portion just paying me back all that he owes me.  the other part of his I'll go ahead and put in his new investment account that he opened at Christmas when he was home.  My daughters portion will go toward college.   But in her regular savings she has about $5000 so it's up to her if she wants to spend some on a car or not. We also have about $1200 each in old US Savings bonds for them.  Some were gifts for baptism and first communion, etc.

I tell you, I never had this type of money when I was their age.

But, she still has to get that job so she can pay for her insurance.  That's the rule around here.

Way to go MN Linda - your own power tools, I'm impressed!!  My hubby and I do much of our own remodeling too, but it's always those final touches that never get done.  I think I am missing at least one piece of trim in every room of my house, or there is one that isn't stained :)  I now hire out the big, highly visible jobs!

P.S. Amanda, I got an official "no" on the president's day weekend trip. :( I'll probably end up going down in March...
Comment by Emily-aaronsgirl11 on February 1, 2011 at 5:33pm

Amanda- Good luck to Jacob from me!! Making up the work would not be fun :/   But it sounds like the funeral was really great. I'm glad he got to come home for it!

And you don't need an Emily clone!! If we both get stationed in WA, you'll get the real Emily!!! :)

I told my mom I wanted May 29th to be here (my graduation). She said well that's good for me... but it's that much sooner that I'm all alone :( I'm her last baby, and the closer graduation gets, the more of a mess she becomes!

View Larger Map I vote for the Home Depot on Sports Arena Blvd. It close to Mission Bay Park and only 4-6 miles from Navy Base (even closer to the Marine's recruiting depot). There is also Sea World nearby. Venture north a bit, we could got to Torrey Pines. No side trips to Tijuana.

Our younger son is in Oklahoma. This cold weather is turning me into a nervous nelly. Sending good test karma to Amanda's fiance.

Amanda, I'll be thinking good thoughts for your fiance on his tests.  I'm glad he was able to go to his grandfather's funeral.

WHEW! Leave for a weekend and I miss 20 pages worth of stuff. Just sounds like a lot of Emily clones (and I agree, I'd like my own personal emily too to have someone here who understands lol) and snow.

Fiancee left last night, though due to the snow, it was a headache to get him out. Beautiful service for his grandfather who passed last week. Made me cry. Military funeral too. I'm really glad his master chief let him go, I think he would have been torn up if he couldn't. Now here's to praying he doesn't fail his test (which was moved to Thursday for him) like he thinks he will since he missed yesterday's and most of today's lectures, and that it doesn't set him behind in his other classes either.

I bought my own mitre saw (and table saw for straight cuts), but with the tiny pieces to go around the door frames, the molding moves just enough that I have to hand sand them to fit and then sometimes they end up too short :-( and I have to start again.

I probably should of removed all the trim around the doors first and then cut the laminate so it would have been below the trim when you put it back on and I wouldn't have to cut the quarter round to cover the space between trim and laminate -- but didn't know that when I was cutting the laminate.  too many doors - door to room, door to bathroom, door to closet, door to linen closet.

Well, I'm very tired of ice and sleet here in Illinois.  Poor dogs have to go out in it.  I want to go to work (school cook = no hours= no pay.)  Am sewing pillowcases for Molly's Adopt a Sailor February adoption, but I'm not nearly as fast as I used to be.  Of course, coming to check N4M and FB slows me down.  lol

Did someone say we're having a meet and greet at a Home Depot or Lowes?  Hubby and I are in!
