Thanks amanda - I know it is also very much a personal preference thing for the sailors too, but I appreciate the information.

I haven't been able to go to any of my fiance's but I'm hoping to make it to proto. I've heard a-school is the most intimate since there are so few of them. Power school is a little more formal and larger so not much one-on-one time. Prototype is hit and miss whether there is actually one (if everyone is behind, its more important to get them out on a ship on time than to have a cute little ceremony). From other discussions, I've heard a-school is the one to hit and if you miss that and are still dying to go, do power.

So, if you could only attend one graduation (A-School, Power School or Prototype), which would you choose?  Or are they not like PIR, which I will remember for the rest of my life as one of the proudest moments and best weekends I have spent with my son.

Comment by texasmom Prototype on January 26, 2011 at 2:11pm

Yes, my boys (16 & 20) and I are driving up for the PIR and his dad and aunt are coming too.  We found out that he is leaving for GC on Tuesday 2/15, which is also his 19th birthday, so hopefully we will be able to see him all weekend.  I'm praying the weather will warm up because we certainly aren't used to it that cold.  Frequently it won't get below freezing all winter, but it has been colder this year.  Yesterday it got up to 60.  I'm going to have to do some shopping.

WHat is the best way to ship stuff to GC?  I'm sure he will at least want his laptop and cell phone asap.

I don't know who can use it.  It said military families. Not sure whom all that would include.  I got it through my "I love someone in the Military" link on my FB.

can parents use the militaryonesource?  what about siblings? I didn't see anywhere on the site where it says who is eligible to use it.

We have been using H&R Block tax software for several years.

Well, just heard from my son who is still in indoctrination this week.  He had a few minutes and got on a computer to "chat" with me.  When he got to GC last week, he was thankful it was warmer (67) than it was when he left GL (-4, although he is used to the cold, we are in Northern Indiana) but he said it has gotten much cooler since last week.

We sent the phone through Snail Mail and the computer through UPS.  Both should arrive today, and we will see which lands in better shape. LIke I mentioned to him, it isn't on our end the mail gets "goosed"  it's what happend while it's trying to find him on base!

Have a great day, All,... It's back to working on computers at the school for me!

Welcome texasmom. Bet you are counting the days until PIR. Hope you are able to make it to GL for the ceremony. It's such a wonderful day with so many memories. You will really feel that big sigh of relief from everyone the second that liberty is called. Do you know if your son is grad and go, or will he stay in GL for several days before going to Goose Creek? My son stayed 5 additional days in GL so we were able to spend the weekend with him. He loved laying on a soft bed that he could actually stretch out on, loved his sister giving him a back massage, and strutted around like a proud peacock in his uniform. Enjoy the times. It will pass soon, then you will be able to have more contact with him.

Hi everyone!  I'm a newish navymom (my son is PIR 2/11) and heading to GC shortly afterwards.  I'm from Round Rock, TX just north of Austin.  He is an ET

Binker's Mom, where do you live in KY?  I lived in Louisville for 2 years while attending Speed Scientific School at UL and loved the area and definitely enjoyed the food and the festivities of Derby week.  It was a week long event 20+ years ago, might be bigger now.  What is EFA?  I'm not a fan of mint julips but love derby pie.
