Hello:

Here is something I learned on my trip to Goose Creek.

My sailor is an ET. There are about 25 of them in the class.

I asked where is the study hall? My Sailor they do everything in their class room. Apparently, they have lockers in the room to keep their stuff. They stay in their room and instructors come to them.

For gifts: NEX gift card, Netflix membership ( they might not have time, but they may want to watch a movie on their computer on the weekend?) I gave my son my code if wants to use it? Maybe change for the vending machines in the Rickover building. My sailor was collecting our change throughout our trip. He doesn't keep cash only the ATM card, so change is good for him.

Hi, my son arrived in GC just before Thanksgiving. He is doing fine. I am hoping some of you can help me with some gift ideas for him... I don't know what he can have, and if there is anything he can use. He already has a computer and an i-phone. Doesn't have much else with him, only things he has purchased since arrival. Any ideas would be appreciated- thanks!!

Well, Dec. 7 is drawing to a close. Say a prayer for all of the sailors who remain forever at Pearl Harbor.

Thanks, Mark! I'll let him know. He was so confident going in, and was frustrated when he got it back. I can't say he's not trying though...

About room inspections- I'm fairly sure that they just look for things to give the guys hits on. Even if their sinks is the cleanest sink they've seen all day, some of them will give the guys a hit, just because. Aaron has learned not to care as long as he doesn't fail.

And Kat- The McDonald's isn't really that close. It's further away than the big Nex is. I wish I could draw you a picture :P
The closest thing to the barracks (well besides the Rickover and such since I've never been back there), is the Mini Nex and Subways. The Dive is on that same street a little ways down, along with the uniform shop. These can be a 5-10 minute walk. Then down the road even further is the big Nex, McDonalds, Chapel, Movie Theater, Car Wash, etc. I'd say it's at least a 15 minute walk... Probably over a mile. At least that's what Aaron always claims :P

I know my son is playing WofW but I hope he learns to temper it a bit. I'm pretty sure it was the reason he wasn't successful in Purdue's Engineering School. He has the smarts, he doesn't drink to excess and he didn't have a steady girlfriend so by process of elimination it had to be that game!
Comment by Mark on December 7, 2010 at 8:12pm
That was supposed to be "regrade " - dang this stoopid phone that thinks it knows better than I do! :)
Comment by Mark on December 7, 2010 at 8:10pm
The first test in HTFF has traditionally been a first wake-up call for the hotshots in nuc school. They probably won't get as many degrade points back as they'd like, because it is the first really difficult test they get and it teaches them the level of attention to detail that will be required the rest of the way. I was also frustrated by my score on that test, but buckled down after and steadily rose to second in my class. For those of you whose kids are still in "A" school, share this with them and they will be a leg up on their classmates.

Josie,
Glad you had a good trip. thanks for the info. I was wondering how close that McDonald's was. Another gift idea. We too are thinking about going down there in March, when our daughter is on spring break. Will have to see how it goes by then. Don't want to go down there in the summer. We may try to take his truck back at some point, but that's a long haul from Phoenix. He might do better to buy something cheap back there, then sell it to another Nuke when he is ready to leave. anyway, glad you got to check out the base and see your son.
Comment by Kat (MM Nuke) on December 7, 2010 at 6:56pm
Seems odd that they would give them a microwave and fridge in their rooms but then mark them down on their inspections for food they have in there.
Comment by amanda on December 7, 2010 at 6:49pm
Josie- Besides watching his figure :P most of them choose not to have food in the room because if anything is open they will get marked down during inspection. My boyfriend's previous roommate had a bag of chips rolled up and clipped in his locked armoire and they got a hit for it.
