I don't know if it's a hard and fast rule but he said when they asked them where they got their hair cut if it wasn't a barber but done by themself or a roommate that they failed inspection. He said that keeping care of the fuzz on the back of his neck would require weekly visits to the barber so I told him to shave it. It is his first week at GC so he's got a lot to learn. He's also been very careful to not spend money willy nilly although they did have a visit by a four star admiral to their room so they spent a lot of money on cleaning supplies this weekend.

Jennifer,
That sounds like bogus info to me, but even if it is true, if I had a roommate I trusted that was willing, I'd just do it anyway. There was no policy like that when I was in. It's not like they'll demand a receipt from a barber, and there's definitely an issue with equity between female and male sailors, because the standards for women's hair are much more flexible than the guys, and it doesn't make sense to force them to have a haircut weekly. I've been single for quite a while, but I still know that it costs the ladies a lot more for a haircut than the guys. :) That really boggles the mind, if there really is such a policy now. It might be of interest to readers that all ships, even submarines have a certain number of crew members that they send to a Navy barber school (not sure how long, but I'm sure it's not more than a week) and they're designated barbers for the crew so that they can get a "proper" haircut before coming into port after a long underway. But even so, we weren't required to have our hair cut by the designated people, we just needed to meet grooming regs before going on liberty. I'm very curious to know if this policy at Goose Crick is for real...

Anyone know why roommates aren't allowed to give each other haircuts? Apparently they're only allowed to get their hair cut by a barber and has to be weekly costing lots of money. Kind of an odd rule in my opinion, but what do I know.

Thanks for Zazzws for the rental resources in B.S. I will have him check them out.
Ginny-my son wasn't real clear on whether`they all actually rented the places or just got their roommate selections done. It sounds like they should get a move on this as I was not aware this was such a tourist area.

My sailor starts "A" school this week or next week. He says that he heard that they're so short of nukes in the fleet that they are contemplating shortening power school to 5 months. The full curriculum would be covered in 5 months rather than 6. Anyone else heard this?

Hi everyone...I'm brand new to N4M. My son will be going to prototype in Ballston Spa, NY in May. Are there any resources for finding roommates that are also in same training program or are on hold in NY for it? He thought he was going to be on hold after power school, but he just found out he is going. Most of his buddies have already gotten their rooming situations settled as they were more sure they were going straight to prototype. Just wondering...How is it decided who gets put on hold and who doesn't?

Gayle--tell her to find Poe's Tavern. Great burgers close to the beach--was it Folly's Island?
