Hi Mimi - it is difficult to get a definitive answer to your question at this point. The Navy is more than a little misleading about how college credit can be given for Nuclear Power School. Here are a couple of facts though. 1) Only a handful of schools will give college credit for Power School. 2) The schools that do insist on a substantial (~$1000) up front to "evaluate" the student to determine what credit they will grant. 3) There are only a couple of degree programs that these schools will apply the credit towards - most are something like "Nuclear Technology". 4) The degree can be useful, but is in no way comparable to an engineering degree. Those are facts - the rest of your question is interesting, and I haven't heard it brought up before - namely, how the Navy views the credits for OCS candidates. That is hard to say - I do know that the Navy wants engineers more than anything else, so they may not be real keen on the credits - that is only my guess, though. The reason the credit thing is tough is because of the classified nature of the program, the Navy will not disclose details about the curriculum to college accreditation boards for evaluation, and also having experienced both Power school and two years of a highly respected engineering school - I can say that the Power school material, while challenging (mostly because of the pace of learning) goes into very specific areas with the purpose of hitting only the theoretical basics needed to understand how the reactor plant works, but is not broad enough, or strong enough in math (Power school math stops well short of calculus, for instance) to compare to a conventional degree program, even the first two years of an engineering program. All that said, there are other avenues towards a commission that will be open to her, that will put her in college for a few years, if she can get into them. The STA-21 program produces a lot of officers for the Navy. I don't know many details about it, because it wasn't around during my active duty time, but recruiters have some information, and you can probably research it online, as well.

jmc18, I can relate. My son has been in the Navy 4 years. I think the hardest birthday away was this year. he just relocated and knew no one. He spent his birhtday alone. My heart ached for him, but he is Navy strong and I am so proud of him.

Elaine, I'm glad they are having your son start over in a month. My son Alex had his appendix out. Although he was physically in good shape in a week or so, he still got tired easily and wasn't quite himself for a couple of weeks. I think he'll do a lot better dealing with the stress of prototype if he has some time to rest and get back into fighting shape as it were. The Navy takes very good care of their Nukes.

Good morning all, I'm new here. My son just started classes at GC on Monday. I've been reading your posts and don't know what RAP days are? Could someone please explain :o) Also, my son said that A school graduation is no big deal. Power school graduation is the big one. Is this true?
Comment by Anti M on July 15, 2009 at 9:39am
I know this one ... weekends, when in the context of leave, DO count as part of the leave days, you cannot combine leave and liberty.

Liberty weekends, NOT in conjunction with leave days, of course do not count against earned leave.

If anyone is attending A School graduation on July 24th, I'm hoping you can share some pictures with me. Scott will be graduating that day but we won't be going down for this one. I'm missing him. He hasn't been home since he left for boot camp last February although I flew down for a visit in early June and it was so good to see him. Thank you to everyone on this site - I enjoy all the topics and your comments.
