Sharon - my prayers are with you, Diego and Kelsey.  I can't imagine a young couple with so much on their minds.  I do know that at one time - I think it was when my son started power school - we received a letter from NNPTC about how hard the program was and how stressful.  This was about 18 months ago - they had several suicides in a month or so period.  There were several numbers of people to call if you were concerned about your sailors.  I know one was the chaplain - maybe he could intervene.  Maybe some of the other old timers on here still have the numbers - I don't have the letter any more.  Sending hugs your way.

SHARON

SUPER MONSTEROUS GIANT HUGS

I understand your hate and anger and horror and fear and sorrow all so well. That's what the air force did to me when I requested a discharge because Binker was a 6 week preemie and my commander didn't have a clue and wanted to send me back into the missile fields before Bink was even supposed to be here. When I asked for the voluntary, he told me he would make sure if I couldn't do 4 years of missiles he would make sure I did nothing else, even though another base commander wanted me to do his PR work. Long story short (to quote my husband), I ended up having to fight to get an honorable all because of a baby (that I really did not want to have to start with, to add insult to injury) and had 9 Congressional inquiries going on  to keep from getting the dishonorable and really ruining my life. By the time everything was over, I HATED the air force and yet it was the only life I had ever known or wanted. I grew up on a flight line. The smell of JP4 burning in the morning is as strong an emotive for me as grandma's blackberry cobbler.

Discharge your anger as you need but never let Diego feel the poison of it. He will survive and survive well. I am still trying to get ahold of Bink to find out if his BC buddy went undesignated when he failed A school. I know buddy is as happy as a clam and just got to Japan and is LOVING it. I like the path of going ahead and applying to the NA from the fleet, not to bite his thumb at the powers that be but to show himself that he still has other options.

All my love to you , Diego and Kelsey. Keep your faith my friend. Nothing happens without a reason and those who do good in this world will have good come back to him or her.

Having heard several moms talk about ambivalent feelings in their sailors, I have to say my son seems to just love it.  It seems like he has found a niche.  He is moving into a hasty marriage b/c I think he gets lonely, but he and his fiance have already decided he will commit his inactive duty time into active.  He won't commit beyond that until he goes to sea and really knows what it's all about.  When we toured the Yorktown after Power School grad, he was really into looking at it, translating the out-dated machinery into what he knows about what is current.  He is anxious to get his fingers dirty.

It hasn't all been a bed of roses but we take the good with the bad.  Even a bed of roses has lots of thorns. Hang in there, Moms.  Our kids will have a lot of junk thrown at them in life.  Our job is to be there for them no matter what.  I love N4M!

If a person flunks nuclear field A school though, they are only obligated to serve the remainder of four years, not the entire six. Yes I feel terrible for Sharon & her son as I said before but this can also be a learning experience for everyone else in the program. If you go in this program you have to pass all the courses no matter how many study hours you have to put in to do it. It is STUDY STUDY STUDY from the first day of class until the end.

yeah it wasn't so bad. Just my first experience as a true Navy wife, figuring out how to be resourceful and on my own.

Amanda--so, it ended up being an OK morning after all.  Glad for that.  And, yes, this community is awesome.  I remember being up in the middle of the night checking chat--and in the process we networked and rescued some snowed in sailors from airports.  It's amazing!

I owe so much to N4M's right now! I was trying to get Rosko (our new dog for those who don't know) to the vet and I went out to my car (well, my husbands that I've never driven alone up to today, which will explain some later), and I took the spare key he gave to me that didn't have a clicker opener. So i went to unlock the drivers side door since that was the only door my key would open, and then i hit the lock button, thinking i pushed it to the unlock (there's no labels), then i ran over to the passenger door but it was locked, went back to the driver door and it had closed on me and I locked myself out! (keys in the ignition, not on thankfully, with my purse and phone in the car already). So I ran over to the base housing office (another awesome military bonus!) and they were able to get my apartment unlocked and got the phone number to where Jacob is working at the moment (on grad hold) but the Senior Chief didn't answer. I get back to the apartment and figure that I just need to get ahold of my mom because she can call the vet and help me figure out how to get the car open. I try scouring the internet for free calls while i'm majorly freaking out.

So here's where N4M's comes in. I get onto the chat and just send out a message asking anyone to help me get ahold of my mom and some random mom gets on and helps!! The Navy wife life sucks sometimes but man, the military community absolutely rocks! lol

Only then to turn around find out that my lovely husband left me HIS keys with the clicker button! ugh...

It didn't say quite that about a comparable position in the contract for somebody that flunks. It said that "I understand that I must be fully qualified at all times throughout my obligated service for all ... academic requirements" and that "my eligibility will be rechecked... periodically. If removed for physical or psychological illness or "for some reason that is not due to my fault, negligence or conduct, I may choose to be reclassified for an enlistment training program for which I'm qualified and a vacancy exists." Now here's the kicker: "If I am not enrolled in the guaranteed options specified above because of some reason that is due to my fault, negligence, or conduct or if I am disenrolled for any other reason not specified in paragraph 3, then I lose that guarantee and, at the Navy's option, remain subject to continued Naval service."

That is the same for all recruits not just nuclear field. But for NF it also says on a separate page "Nuclear Field personnel must demonstrate good academic performance at all phases of training. Markedly inferior performance, including very low passing final grades or obvious lack of effort in any training phase may result in disenrollment from the Nuclear Field Program."
